As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

I think listening to them to make sure their needs are known and understood by all parties involved. This helps create a supportive atmosphere that can hopefully allow the student to reach their potential. Making it a fun and rewarding experience for both parties is also important, as this can show a student how good the experience can be,…

The learnings given by a tutor needs to be tailored as per the student.. Every individual is different, has different interests, has different caliber. We need to understand their potential, unlock it and provide our boost to it. I am a very patient person and understand that i may need to repeat my explanations as needed. Sometimes I might need…

A tutor should take their time with a student and make sure the student understands before moving on. I believe the purpose of tutoring should be to provide learning strategies that are specific to the individual in contrast with teaching in a classroom (at the pace of the class). A tutor should provide multiple strategies for learning. For…

Tutors needs to deliver their fullest in educating the student. They need to have the patience to redirect from the main concept in focus to teach the fundamentals which the student lacks the knowledge. I explain as detailed as possible depending on the extent the student knows-if the student lacks the basics of the subject, I make a considerable…

In my opinion, it's most important to help students to understand basic concepts and theories when tutoring them. With these knowledge, students will have confidence to overcome problems and hardness in Maths by themselves. For the past two years, I have tutored several students in Physics and Maths, especially Math Methods year 11 and 12.…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

A tutor should be someone very good at analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of a student and helping them accordingly. A tutor should be able to lay out proper guidelines for the student in order for them to be able to reach their target and goals. I feel the strength that I have as a tutor is that I am very good at analyzing the understanding…

Be able to communicate information clearly and concisely, as well as being flexible enough to come up with different explanations for topics when a certain method isn't understood. I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

The roll of a tutor is two-fold. Firstly, to help students understand the material they are working with. There are many ways to go about this, but one of the most important roles of a tutor is to be able to bring intuition to the abstract. This in addition to introducing effective methods for solving problems. The second key roll is helping…

In my opinion, the most important responsibility of a tutor is not to teach specific knowledge or skills but to incite the confidence and curiosity for knowledge in students. The most important this that a tutor can do for a student, is to keep in mind that tutoring is not the same as giving a lecture. That needs to be reflected in the adaptation of the tutoring session to the individual student. This can be done by lowering or raising the level if needed, speeding up or slowing down, and providing precise feedback…

Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. A tutor should be strict about discipline but at the same time friendly and lenient understanding students problem. Inside FirleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sienna worked through quadratic equations by practising factorising and graphing, building a strong foundation for more advanced algebra.

In Year 11, Daniel focused on differentiation skills including finding derivatives, exploring inflection points, and analysing maximum and minimum values using sample curve sketches.

For Year 9, Milly revised surds—working with square roots and applying index laws to simplify expressions accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student struggled to select the right kinematics equation and had difficulty translating worded problems into diagrams—this often led to confusion about which variables to use.

As one tutor observed in Year 10 Maths, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," highlighting a tendency to write down numbers without clarifying their meaning or connection to the question.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student found it challenging to organise her working clearly when handling positive and negative signs in algebra; unclear layout made tracking operations harder.

In upper primary, several students hesitated when recalling times tables, sometimes relying on written calculations for facts expected from memory—this slowed progress during more complex tasks like multi-digit multiplication.

Recent Achievements

One Firle tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after struggling with surds and index laws, began applying these concepts much more independently—she now solves operations with surds confidently and uses the right index rules without prompting.

In Year 9, another student who used to avoid correcting mistakes is now asking for extra questions on factorising and can walk through sum and product rule problems out loud, catching her own errors as she works.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by reading sentences aloud to self-check punctuation placement—something she hesitated to try before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
