I believe a tutor should inspire a student to reach for certain goals by first of all being an example of greatness him/herself or by pointing the student towards greatness. A tutor could achieve this by citing examples of great people whose names lived beyond them thus helping the student find purpose in life. Once the passion to become more and…

"Tutoring improves the tutee's self-esteem, attitude toward subject matter, and academic performance as well as personal growth." Indeed, from a personal viewpoint, tutoring is not only providing additional support for students to 'complete' their homeworks. Building student's self-esteem and stimulating their interest are equally important. I…

Build up confidence to believe that the respective student can succeed. Confidence is the most important thing that a student should have. Without having confidence student will not commit to do studies. I think i can understand students very well. Whether they understand or not can be observed by their actions. The most important things are to raise their interest and help them learn the knowledge. Before imparting the knowledge, it is essential to know the junior and their mindset if they are interested in following your mentoring. I think my strengths are my empathy and persistence. I will make the junior and I understand each other, and we share a…

Building confidence in a students ability. Sometimes the only thing preventing students from excelling is doubt in their knowledge. Yes, nobody wants to ask 'silly' questions in the classroom when all your friends are there, but as a tutor it is important to not only help in understanding concepts in theory; but also instill adequate confidence in…

Tutor must have patience to repeat the concepts. Preparing beforehand the lessons also helps in avoiding the confusion while teaching. Tutor can prepare homework for students to practice. As a tutor, I believe I can deliver the class starting from the basic concepts, so that students can grasp the subject from the depths. I can easily solve the…

listening to students and finding out what they want out of the sessions and how they prefer to learn. By doing so we can offer a method of learning that's customized to them as an individual and not as a class. Learning occurs in many formats and a tutor should provide a format that isn't inherently applied in schools - aiding in the…

Besides from general knowledge of the subjects, understanding the strengths as well as weaknesses of the students is a must for personal tutors. We can develop the most effective way to teach if we are fully aware of these factors. Also, one of the most important things a tutor can do is to be patient and considerate with their students. This way…

I believe, more than anything else, that a tutoring space should feel judgement free for a student. A student should not feel hesitant to ask questions or to clarify a concept. In fact, I believe it to be a good sign if a student is able to outright say that my explanation is not what they need or understand. Fostering such a safe and trusting…

A tutor's traditional role is to deliver a concept to a student. However I believe that they also work behind the scenes to raise a student's confidence and enjoyment in a subject. Sometimes it's the tutor that makes or breaks a student's interest and motivation to learn. I have recently just finished schooling so I am very knowledgeable of the…

A tutor needs to analyse and understand the way a specific student learns, and cater for that. While a tutors ability to explain a problem is important, I believe the ability to explain a problem in a variety of different ways, while also showing a student that needing help with school is completely normal, is of upmost importance. I understand…

I think that as a tutor of a child or young adult one of the most important tasks is to analyse how the student feels about the subject and adapt to their individual needs. This can look like making classes more engaging for less enthusiastic students or advancing topics for more engaged students. I've always been quite passionate about the…

Inside FyansfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Saanvi worked on comparing and ordering fractions with the same denominator, interpreted fraction meanings in real-life contexts, and practised finding ratios using unit conversions.

For Year 10, Phoebe focused on revising index laws and applying them to exam-style questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Tom tackled exponential growth and decay as new content and solved additional problems involving irrational numbers.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student, when working on quadratic factorising, often relied on notes rather than recalling rules independently; as one tutor observed, "she needed reminders for each step instead of trying from memory."

In a senior session, another student avoided surface area worded problems, choosing to repeat familiar exponential drills instead—this meant less growth in multi-step reasoning.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner guessed division answers rather than showing working, which hid small errors and slowed progress with remainders.

Across both primary and high school sessions, unfinished practice questions sometimes left concepts only partially reinforced by the end of the lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Fyansford recently noticed some real turning points with students at different year levels.

In Year 9, a student who used to freeze up over large numbers tackled complex ratio problems without hesitation and even started coming up with creative algebra solutions on her own.

During a high school session on exponential growth and decay, another student went from confusion about compound interest to solving practice questions independently—she now requests tougher examples for extra challenge.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously lost focus during maths sessions has begun showing steady attention and finishes bookwork before asking what's next.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Geelong West Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hamlyn Banks Primary School.
