What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

I think its most important to listen and consider your students by asking questions, attentively listening to their responses to determine if they have underlying misunderstandings or misconceptions about the material. By letting a student explain the topic in their own words, I can diagnose the issue and perhaps offer a new perspective on how I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being empathetic and understanding as this allows the student to feel seen, valued and respected, and it will motivate them to pursue their studies. It is also important to cater to every student's needs by providing individualised lesson plans, worksheets, topic tests and mock exams with…

Most important would definitely be effort towards a student. No student would want a tutor who does not have the best interest in them and would definitely not want a tutor who is giving 50% of their efforts. Another important thing a tutor can do for a student is show passion and that they care, and that they are someone the students can…

The most important things a tutor can do are build the student’s confidence, provide consistent support, and create a safe space for learning. A good tutor doesn’t just help with grades, they help the student believe in their ability to learn and succeed. Encouraging curiosity, setting goals, and providing tailored feedback are also key. Whilst a tutor is only present with their student for a limited time, they can help by providing a clear understanding of what the syllabus wants and giving resources. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to enrich their understanding and reinvigorate or catalyze a passion in a particular subject. Nowadays, a student's passion for a particular subject dwindles as they go further and further into their high school career. This may be due to external factors such as pressure or…

I believe that a tutor cannot elevate a student's competency into a whole new level but they themselves do. Although high results is a must, tutors should also respect or accept what students may want to gain out of their HSC marks. We cannot force students to learn but making the content more interesting will help motivate those who struggle to grasp the concept. The key point is that after every session, the student can leave knowing that they have…

My son understood exactly what Margaret taught him the other day, with which he was having a lot of problems with.
Rebecca, Georges Hall

Inside Georges HallTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Sam revised standard mathematics topics including surface area and indices, with targeted practice on algebraic equations.

Another Year 11, Mia, worked through questions involving simple and compound interest as well as methods for rearranging formulae to isolate a specific variable.

For primary support, Year 4 student Jay focused on maths concepts like interpreting time phrases and reading analogue clocks, alongside building his English vocabulary by creating word lists with definitions and example sentences.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's written work was flagged as needing clearer presentation—brackets were often missed when multiplying negatives, which led to sign errors ("the presentation of answers needed improvement so as to be mathematically correct").

In Year 10 financial maths, a tendency emerged to attempt annuity problems before planning the approach, resulting in confusion about which formulas applied.

Meanwhile, a primary student found adding mixed numeral fractions difficult at first and hesitated to show working; only after guided practice did confidence grow.

In all cases, moments of hesitation or skipped steps made it harder to catch small mistakes early.

Recent Achievements

One Georges Hall tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with complex algebra now working through factorisation and expansion questions right after a single demonstration, rarely needing extra help.

In Year 9, another student has begun asking clarifying questions when stuck—previously she would stay silent or guess—and recently solved percentage error and surface area problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary school made a noticeable shift from struggling with decimals to answering decimal addition questions independently after just a few guided examples.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Georges River Grammar.
