I understand that teachers don't always have time to help students one-on-one and that tutors can help bridge the gap. I believe that learning is an exponential process, so a small victory in a tutoring session can lead to enormous benefits in the student's future. I am passionate about enabling students to maximise their…

I believe that the two most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to help them gain a passion for their studies, and to teach them to apply their study skills to all of their subjects. I think that these two factors can really help students succeed with school and allow them to reach their full potential elsewhere in life. One of…

For me the most important aspect of being a tutor is that I must be able to maintain my students motivation. Somewhat like a personal trainer. Most clients hire a personal trainer not solely for their instruction but for their motivation and I belive this also applies in tutoring. Secondly a tutor must be able to explain concepts and ideas on the…

Having someone to rely on. The tutor and student connection is more personal that that of a teacher. This allows them to become closer and ensure that the student will concentrate more. Additionally a close connection between he student and tutor reminds the student that they always have someone on there side. Someone who they can rely on and work…

The most important thing a tutor can do is ensure that a student does not hate the subject they require tutoring in. The tutor must approach the subject on the same level as the student so that the student does not dread having a tutoring session and develops a liking towards the subject. I ensure that someone works to their full potential and if…

I think the most important thing, and probably the greatest thing I can give to students is inspiration. My subject knowledge is something they should be able to take for granted. If I can inspire them, then they will go on learning long after their contact with me is ended. In addition, the passion is another vital element for math tutoring. I…

Consistency. I have been a tutor to some students for over a year. A tutor should be able to read the students mind if he fails to do so he has failed in his job. Understanding what the student needs and give the student what the student lacks and preserve and enhance what the student already has, this is what tutoring is all about. Guide, but not tell. I have always found it really important when helping students to lead them in the right direction with their train of thought in a matter but to always let them work things out and come to conclusions on their own. In my perspective, providing confidence is the most important thing a tutor can do for a student. The majority of people would hire a tutor is because of one's unsatisfactory performance towards the subject. Confidence would increase the understanding process for most of the people. Furthermore, to excel in the subject, the student has to work…

The main thing is being able to effectively explain a topic or clear students' doubts. If the student is able to explain the topic to others, I believe that is a good indication of their understanding and shows that a tutor has successfully explained a topic or cleared doubts. Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

Inside Glen HuntlyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Henry worked on converting mixed fractions to improper fractions and practiced adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions with different denominators.

In Year 8, Sarah focused on simplifying algebraic expressions and collecting like terms using practice questions from her textbook.

For Year 10, Michael tackled quadratic equations from past tests as well as set notation in its various forms, including finding minimum points of graphs through worked examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to keep track of negative signs when adding and subtracting fractions, with one tutor noting, "she needs to look at the signs in front of the term… then subtract or add accordingly."

In Year 10, forgetting to write units and not double-checking data led to errors in measurement and statistics questions.

A Year 11 student avoided attempting complex polynomial division without notes—hesitation here slowed progress during independent tasks.

Meanwhile, a senior student repeatedly skipped re-reading worded problems fully, missing key details and needing extra explanation before proceeding with calculus applications.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Huntly tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Sienna, used to wait for hints before attempting tricky calculus problems, but in their latest session she worked through finding derivatives from first principles mostly on her own and asked targeted questions only when really stuck.

Meanwhile, Lily in Year 7 had previously struggled to spot mistakes in her test answers, but after some guided practice she now independently reviews her work and corrects errors without prompting.

In another recent session, Eve (Year 10) was able to solve exponential equations that had caused trouble in earlier homework attempts and finished the whole set without needing step-by-step guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Eira College.
