Impart sound knowledge and learning skills to allow students to continue with these skills without a tutor Strengths I feel I am able to really get to know each of my students as an individual. I try to get a feel for what strategies work with each one. They do not all learn the same and what works for one may not for another. I always try to be…

Build their confidence in not only their studies but also themselves. This includes comfortability. Students should feel confident in asking questions if they are unsure, requesting clarification of complex ideas, and acknowledging that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. Additionally, develop critical thinking skills and…

I can get the words out of a textbook and make them stick. Knowledge should be committed forever and understood, not simply memorised. I can personalise how the facts are delivered, and can support discussion and inquiry into the right answers, to allow students the room to crystallise information in their own minds in their own ways, to connect…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is be encouraging towards a student; often students get tutoring in a subject they are struggling in and are already mentally finding it difficult so it is critical a tutor positively encourages them and reminds them of their improvement. It is also very important a tutor listens to the…

I believe there are never bad students. It is the responsibility of the teacher to understand/identify the strength of the students and help them build on it. A teacher can have great influence on students life. The more positive and encouraging the teacher is, more successful and confident the student will become. Students look up to their…

The most important thing a tutor can do for one of their students is to appear approachable so the student is not afraid to ask questions or for further insight. I believe that my strengths as a tutor is that I can simplify advanced concepts in mathematics or physics by using analogies and demonstations to help the student understand the more…

A tutor should be able to help overcome challenges the student is facing in a manner that is comfortable for the student. Additionally, the tutor should set strategies and goals to ensure that challenge is overcome efficiently and nothing is forgotten. The tutor should also be an aid to the parents to ensure they are happy with progress. Overall,…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is to help the student find confidence that they can achieve, whilst keeping their passion alive for the subject. A tutor is there to help students find the answers so they can realise their full potential. Through my work as a science communicator, I have the ability to alter and tailor my…

A tutor's main job is to help re-explaining new concepts and/or help students consolidate new concepts as well as integrating new ones as they are being taught. Therefore, the most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to explain new concepts in simple and relatable terms, encourage interests in a particular subject and most…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is creating lesson plans and methods based around that student. The tutor should also never make a student feel dumb or less capable, but instead should show the students that they have the same capabilities as their peers, it may just take other methods, and concepts that they are not getting…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to foster a supportive and encouraging learning environment. Inside GlenelgTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Finn practiced division and multiplication with decimals and fractions, as well as tackling a variety of word problems from a worksheet.

In Year 10, James focused on understanding sampling distributions and calculating confidence intervals for means, plus explored the structure of atomic nuclei in physics—covering isotopes, nuclear reactions, mass defect, and energy equivalence.

For Year 12, Una worked through practice questions on simple and compound interest alongside capital gains tax calculations in maths, while also reviewing key chemistry concepts like atomic theory and mole calculations ahead of an exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Chemistry, one student struggled to confidently recall technical terms and explain key concepts, as noted: "she was able to explain answers but could not give the correct term." This made it difficult to fully answer test questions or engage in class discussion.

In Year 12 Maths, a student often left questions blank rather than attempting an answer when unsure, which limited feedback opportunities.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student forgot her maths booklet at home, disrupting the session's flow and slowing progress on new topics. These moments reveal how process gaps can disrupt learning even when content is understood.

Recent Achievements

One Glenelg tutor noticed real progress with a Year 9 student, Una, who recently started identifying and correcting her own miscalculations in chemistry without prompting—a shift from earlier sessions where she'd wait for hints.

In another high school session, Chloe managed to solve ratio problems independently after previously needing step-by-step support on similar tasks.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Mavis showed new initiative by reading comprehension texts aloud voluntarily and tackling unfamiliar words head-on instead of skipping them. She wrapped up the session by coming up with extra research questions to investigate next time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's Memorial School.
