The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. I hope that my student can see the beauty in the sometimes boring schoolwork, and see the deep underlying connection and unity of it all. However, sometimes desperate times happen, and then we must drop the profound thoughts and do what needs…

Make them like learning for the sake of learning rather than chase after a mark. We as humans love learning but schools and other institutions often encourage chasing certain metrics rather than curiosity and wonder when it comes to learning a subject I can give constructive feedback on a student based on their performance and I encourage them to…

I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. My experience as a tennis coach has shown me how different students learn at…

I believe it is really important that a tutor is able to communicate well, encourage and understand the primary needs of their students. The tutor should then be able to think of many different and useful strategies to help the student learn. It is very important the tutor brings a sense of fun to the lesson, to urge the student to want to learn…

A tutor should motivate students to want to achieve their best and provide them with opportunities and knowledge on how they can achieve this. A tutor should create a supportive learning environment where the student can thrive and feels comfortable to ask questions. A tutor should teach their student/s how to be a self-directed learner, as this…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them not just what to think, but how to think. Its about providing them with strategies to find their own answers. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in a subject area. A student with more confidence will feel comfortable with the subject matter and will be able to apply it to a wider variety of questions and problems. Attaining this confidence can be achieved through a number of methods such as:…

I believe a tutor should be able to pass on their mindset of growth and resilience to a student. A student's life would never end after just school, and being resilient and believing that you could grow above any challenges would be a huge key to their own success. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is creating lesson plans and methods based around that student. Inside Glenelg NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ciara focused on addition and subtraction with money, practicing borrowing numbers and tackling worded problem-solving tasks.

For Year 7, Josh worked through fraction operations including addition, subtraction, and multiplication using examples from homework and targeted practice sets.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Zara revised indices in preparation for an upcoming test and explored square roots along with highest common factor concepts through direct calculation exercises.

Recent Challenges

Incomplete homework was a consistent challenge across several years. For example, in Year 5, "student still did not complete homework," leading to ongoing confusion with double-digit multiplication.

In Year 8, missed homework meant the student struggled to recall fraction methods and couldn't show working when asked.

A Year 10 student often waited for peers' answers rather than attempting questions independently; as one tutor observed, "she waited for Ella before answering because she was unsure."

During problem-solving in Year 7, guessing or giving up too quickly meant time was lost re-explaining steps instead of building confidence with complex tasks.

Recent Achievements

One Glenelg North tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to keep quiet when confused now speaks up whenever she's stuck, especially during problem-solving questions—last session she asked for help and then finished all ten division quiz problems correctly.

In Year 8, another student who often guessed at answers has started checking her work with notes from previous weeks and talks through calculations out loud; she completed her homework independently for the first time.

A younger student, previously unsure about shape names, was able to confidently identify and count sides, faces, and edges by relating them to objects around the house.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Leonards Primary School.
