I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to create an environment in which they feel supported and welcomed. It is key to achieving results that you build a strong rapport with your student. If they feel judged by you and thus do not ask the questions they need to ask, it can stagnate their progress and damage their…

As a tutor, I believe that the most important thing I can bring to a student is a different perspective on the subject matter they are studying. While teachers and textbooks can be great resources, they often present the material in a standardized and one-size-fits-all way that may not resonate with every student. By providing a different voice…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are building their confidence, making learning engaging, and helping them truly understand concepts rather than just memorizing them. I always try to break down complex topics into simpler ideas, adapt my teaching to the students learning style, and create a supportive environment…

A tutor is not there to do a student's homework for them but rather to help them think and problem solve in new ways so that they can complete their work more effectively and be a more independent learner. Thus, a tutor can help by bringing with themselves a large amount of knowledge in the subject area(s) and by having a patient and understanding…

For every student this may mean something different. I believe there is a unique formula for every students success. The best thing a tutor can do is to uncover this formula and…

I believe that the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to make the foundation of the subject very strong so that it becomes easier for them to understand the difficult subjects. I am patient with the students and come with innovative ways to make them understand the concepts. In the first few classes I build rapport with the…

The tutor must be able to eliminate every question or doubt a student has on a subject or concept and enable the student to comprehend the information not just for scoring grades, but, for understanding and using the information in any scenario which requires it. Hence, the tutor must be able to inculcate this idea in the student and facilitate…

Students - myself included - gain much more knowledge when lessons are more flexible. It usually takes me a few sessions to understand a…

I feel that a tutor can basically change a student's perception to a particular subject. A tutor has the power to build the foundations of a subject in a simplified and innovative way such that it is comprehended easily by the students. When it comes to teaching new concepts, I seldom go by the book. I think it is more important to give a…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to make the content understandable rather than just helping to memorise it. But also to normalise mistakes and to assert the importance of educated guessing. Any student can learn faster by giving something a go rather than waiting until they are certain. I believe I can explain and break down…

Inside HawkerTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Hayley focused on converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and then practiced quick mental addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

In Year 8, James tackled linear inequalities and straight-line graphing, extending into finding midpoints and distances between points.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lewis worked on exponential functions and logarithms, applying them to real-life problems for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student showed ongoing reliance on visual aids and flashcards for times tables, recalling answers quickly only when prompts were available. When asked orally (e.g., "2 x 7"), she hesitated or struggled to answer without these supports—she performs very well, almost instantly, when we use them, whereas, if we're doing purely oral exercises, it is a bit harder for her. This meant the transition from visual memory to independent recall was incomplete.

In Year 9 mathematics, one student rarely labeled triangle sides or wrote out working in geometry tasks; skipping this step led to confusion about orientation and errors in problem-solving that took extra time to untangle.

Another senior student hesitated to ask questions during lessons—even when unsure—mirroring his classroom experience; this limited his engagement and left misunderstandings unresolved as he moved through algebraic techniques.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hawker noticed that a Year 9 student, Jensen, has started consistently asking for help when stuck on graphing problems—something he avoided early on—which meant he prepared specific questions to discuss at the start of sessions.

In senior maths, Callan (Year 12) recently built on his understanding of gradients and is now able to apply the power rule accurately without prompting.

Meanwhile, Evie (Year 4) showed new independence by using homemade flashcards to master her 6 and 7 times tables, answering every card correctly during review.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kippax Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hawker Primary School.
