Student will not able to maintain the theory if all they they can remember is the process I think my strength is the ability to communicate with younger kids and also trying different methods to help them understand and learn. I believe that learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure that the student has gained the ability to consolidate the information taught. The student must be able to reproduce the content learned in their own words at their own time. Specifically for English, many students have wonderful, original ideas in their minds, however, they…

Firstly, the most important thing that a tutor should do is build up confidence in their kids that they have the potential to achieve their goals and are destined for the best. This instantly boosts up the kids for striving for accuracy and their dreams. Secondly, a tutor should never be a demotivator in any manner. This is important as any…

The most important things I can do for a student, is to put myself in their shoes when teaching. Often some students take longer to understand, comprehend or apply the knowledge taught. It' so important to go at their pace, whilst challenging them as well, because there's nothing we can't achieve if we set our minds to it. It' important to simply…

I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

A tutor can provide little tips and tricks to answering questions, especially in Math. Always be within reach, in terms of communication platforms, so that the student can clarify any doubts at any point in time. A tutor should also be flexible to the timings of the students yet not compromising on other students schedule. I am patient, clear…

I consider that a tutor should be a good teacher but also a good person. He should be able to communicate and transmit his passion to give the desire to learn. I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

I believe that listening to the student is among the most important things a tutor can do. It is imperative that the student feels comfortable to share concepts that they feel unfamiliar with, therefore building a relationship with them is crucial. Having a good understanding of the student's optimal way of learning is also beneficial to the…

According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. Developing a love for learning also goes a long way, as a tutor teaches a subject which he likes he can encourage curiosity and passion for the subject in his students…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

A tutor must be patient, flexible, honest and attentive. It is important that tutors do not give students the answer directly but allows the student to discover the answer with extra guidance. The ultimate goal of tutoring is to help students become independent learners. A tutor must be willing to adapt to different situations and learning…

I think that being able to build a rapport with the student is one of the fundamental skills to be a good tutor. This lays the foundation for the student being comfortable in asking questions to the tutor, as well as the tutor finding a teaching style that is most suited to the student. A tutor can be a guiding light for students. Each student has their own way of absorbing the information that they are taught. This might not always be available to students in a large classroom setting. A good tutor recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of the students and guides them accordingly. I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

Inside HawthornTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ella focused on fractions and percentages, showing strong recall of key processes and also worked through review questions for an upcoming maths test.

Year 8 student Molly practiced algebra skills by expanding brackets and collecting like terms, as well as calculating the area of composite shapes by breaking them into simpler components.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student revised negative numbers (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and used factor trees to strengthen their understanding of integer operations.

Recent Challenges

Over several sessions, some high school students showed a tendency to rely on calculators for basic operations—one Year 9 student was encouraged repeatedly to practice multiplication and algebra without technology, as she understands the concepts but finds doing quick calculations challenging.

In Year 8 algebra, messy or inconsistent working made it difficult to spot small errors; for example, incorrect dimensions crept into solutions when steps weren't clearly set out.

In primary grades, forgetting times tables (especially 4s and 8s) meant number recall slowed down problem-solving.

When test review was suggested before assessments in Year 10, worded problems were often left unattempted due to lack of confidence.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hawthorn noticed one Year 9 student who previously needed step-by-step prompting for algebra now attempts questions independently and even suggests her own approaches before asking for help.

In a recent high school session, another student who used to guess when stuck has started pausing to identify where she went wrong on maths problems—she caught her own mistake with minimal guidance this week.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled to recall number patterns is now recognising them more quickly and finishing subtraction tasks with fewer errors than before, completing all ten assigned problems without needing extra support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mitcham Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Westbourne Park Primary School.
