To inspire students. I remember one of my teachers told me that a teacher can not only teach students about their subjects but also about how to be a person. I have a strong academic background. I have an ATAR of 99.6. I also taught Y12 Mathematical Methods as a private tutor before. I am confidant that I can explain difficult concepts and answer…

Teaching the students that they have the ability to achieve great grades on their own. Many of the problems that face the students is a lack of self belief. The concepts and questions can seem very daunting at times at it is very easy to get into the mindset that it is too difficult. As a tutor much of the success that the students achieve after a…

A tutor should always analyse the strengths and weaknesses of their students. This will provide a detailed insight to the tutors on which areas to particularly focus on. Furthermore, based on the strengths and weaknesses of each student, a tutor can prepare a routine for the students in order to enhance their knowledge in those subjects where the…

A tutor should always strive to cater to the students needs. Many students have different aspirations, attitudes and interests. A tutor should be able to analyse the situation and adjust his/her teaching methods accordingly. I am passionate, energetic, motivated and organised. First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. I love math so I love teaching math and I hope I can impart my love for mathematics in my students too. I have been tutoring for a long time so I can say I do have quite a bit of…

Inspire them about how to think about the question and maybe, the world in a logical and rational way. As one of my lecturer once told me, "what I can teach you is not the knowledge itself, but the problem solving skills you learnt from this course". I am energetic in teaching maths and, particularly, in the interesting parts about Maths. E.g. we…

One of the most important things a tutor can do is paying attention. By doing so, a tutor can clearly identify where they are struggling, and then provided catered guidance as a response to that. It can also pinpoint a student's specific learning style, allowing further tailoring of sessions to mimic that. Further, it generally just shows the…

The most important thing that is necessary in learning is that we understand what we study. Though it seems difficult, giving each student the individual attention is what a tutor should strive to achieve. The different mindsets in the class should be brought together and set in a pathway where they get excited about learning something new every…

A tutor should simplify complex ideas, guide students through problems step by step, and foster a positive learning environment where questions are always welcome. It sounds basic but it is a common error made by tutors. Making sure that the student understands more than just how to solve the problem. That they understand the underlying concepts behind every problems they do. Even if they do not wish to pursue the field in the future, understanding the concepts will give them the confidence to approach all…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, encourage independent thinking, and create a safe and supportive environment for learning. A tutor’s role isn’t just to provide the right answers, but to help the student understand the reasoning behind them. It’s also important to…

Every student is different, from personalities to their academic goals. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is care about them. I believe that once you care about someone you work more towards their goals, helping them in any way that you can and even going out of your way to ensure they achieve their goals and are proud of the accomplishments they have achieved. If a tutor stops caring about their…

Inside HeathertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara focused on solving linear equations with brackets and pronumerals on both sides, as well as using the elimination method for simultaneous equations.

In Year 9, Sam worked through applications of Pythagoras' theorem in real-world scenarios and learned how to find unknown side lengths in trigonometry by rearranging formulas.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ethan practised adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions—including negatives—and used stem-and-leaf plots to organise data visually.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly relied on written notes rather than practicing applying concepts to new types of probability and algebra questions, leading to hesitation when unfamiliar wording appeared.

In Year 10, a student used their cheat sheet but struggled to identify which formulas or diagrams matched the question during open-note assessments; as noted, "she needs to practice more on which information/diagrams relates to the questions."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student avoided showing full working out in ratio simplification tasks—skipping lines meant errors went unnoticed until answers were checked. This pattern left confusion during revision and increased stress before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Heatherton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to wait for hints, but now works through tricky algebra questions step by step before asking for help.

In another session, a Year 7 student who often rushed and guessed at maths problems started taking time to read each question carefully and checked her answers on her own.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 English, one student who struggled with essay planning has begun outlining her arguments independently before writing—she finished last lesson's outline without any prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christway College.
