The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer help which is tailored to the student's specific needs. This is not usually done in classes as teachers have a large number of students and cannot always pitch their lessons at the right level for everybody. A tutor,on the other hand, who works with a small group of students, can…

I believe that understanding is the most important thing a tutor must do for a student. Without comprehension, the tutor would not be able to communicate with the student in the same language, making it impossible for the tutor to address the issue the student is having and come up with solutions to help the student's condition. I am currently…

In my opinion, the most critical responsibility of a tutor is not during the teaching phase, but in the phase that comes after the lesson. After learning the theory, the student will begin practising problems related to the topic and it is during this period, that most of the learning takes place. Hence, it is important for tutors to be there to…

To help them in all the possible ways so that they are confident that they can do it. Also, try to make them think out of the box so that they can actually help themselves as well. I am always ready to help and make sure that people are understanding what needs to be done. Also, I am very patient and I can explain the same thing over and over…

I believe being able to provide individualised instructions is a crucial part of being a tutor. Tailoring teaching methods to suit the student's learning style, pace, and preferences ensures a more effective and personalised learning experience. Additionally, beyond academic achievements, a tutor should inspire a passion for learning and promote…

Tutors can be a reason to guide the students in the right direction. Sometimes, a student might need a tiny little nudge to get them on track and tutors can be or are the right persons for that. A tutor can be a friend guiding the student in every obstacle they come across. A tutor can also be a role model for the students by creating a long…

Tutors can help students develop the knowledge required for their schooling, but also help students develop the skills to learn efficiently and to a deeper level. This sets up good foundations for the future, if the student would like to study more in the future in the field, and will be helpful for future endeavors (university for example). I am…

To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. Explaining the concepts clearly and easily along with appropriate examples are the must for a tutor. But, more importantly, a tutor should help students cultivate good habits like hard work, discipline, confidence, time management etc. By doing so, a student not only grows academically but also personally. And this can help them in the future. I…

In my opinion, the most important thing a private tutor can do for a student is give them the opportunity to make mistakes in a safe environment where they feel they won't be judged. I believe that teachers/tutors make the greatest impact on a developing child or young adult's mind. Apart from the child's family, a teacher/tutor has the most influential face to face contact with a student, where it be as a mentor or as a friend. Hence, I strongly feel that tutors have the opportunity and responsibility to educate and develop a…

A tutor can develop a passion of learning in a student so that a student can learn and grow even when the teacher is with the student or not. Inside HughesdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Harry revised core trigonometry concepts and completed a past VCE exam under timed conditions.

A Year 10 student focused on matrix arithmetic, working through examples of both multiplication and transformations using visual aids.

For Year 6, Zara practised converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time formats and solved problems involving telling the time on analogue clocks, including interpreting phrases like "quarter to" and "half past."

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student "occasionally skipped through a question and made an error"—not showing all working led to repeated mistakes in algebraic tasks, which slowed progress during revision.

For a Year 10 student revising domain and range, relying mainly on visual memory rather than written notes meant graph interpretation errors lingered.

In English (Year 7), essay writing suffered because ideas weren't clearly organised; as noted, "she needs to follow the essay plan so she stays on topic."

Meanwhile, unfinished homework in both Years 6 and 11 left key gaps unaddressed before tests—especially with simultaneous equations and creative writing tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Hughesdale tutor noticed a big shift with one Year 9 student who used to guess at equations but now talks through her reasoning out loud and checks her work before moving on.

In a senior maths session, a Year 11 boy who'd previously struggled with polynomial long division was able to tackle an application problem without any prompting by the end of the lesson.

Meanwhile, one younger student in Year 4 completed all her homework and even took on some extra-challenging extension questions she would have avoided just weeks ago, finishing them without needing help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh Grammar.
