I believe it's crucial for the instructor to first comprehend the student. As a former tutor, I am of the opinion that not every lesson is fully understood by students the first time around. The tutor must make sure to reiterate everything till the student is able to grasp it. As was previously mentioned, a tutor must be on time and patient with…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them build small skills which they are able to use in their lives. For example, helping a student open up means that they have developed that skill which will help them to open up to their teachers perhaps at school etc. I believe that the role of a teacher is to help students grow…

A tutor must teach the underlying concepts and "why things work" rather than just "how things work". A good tutor is much more than just a problem solver. Good tutor builds capability in students to actually use what they learnt to solve and analyze complex real world problems. Strong background and grasp of the subject in question. Currently a…

Inside HughesdaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Harry revised core trigonometry concepts and completed a past VCE exam under timed conditions.

A Year 10 student focused on matrix arithmetic, working through examples of both multiplication and transformations using visual aids.

For Year 6, Zara practised converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time formats and solved problems involving telling the time on analogue clocks, including interpreting phrases like "quarter to" and "half past."

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, one student "occasionally skipped through a question and made an error"—not showing all working led to repeated mistakes in algebraic tasks, which slowed progress during revision.

For a Year 10 student revising domain and range, relying mainly on visual memory rather than written notes meant graph interpretation errors lingered.

In English (Year 7), essay writing suffered because ideas weren't clearly organised; as noted, "she needs to follow the essay plan so she stays on topic."

Meanwhile, unfinished homework in both Years 6 and 11 left key gaps unaddressed before tests—especially with simultaneous equations and creative writing tasks.

Recent Achievements

A Hughesdale tutor noticed a big shift with one Year 9 student who used to guess at equations but now talks through her reasoning out loud and checks her work before moving on.

In a senior maths session, a Year 11 boy who'd previously struggled with polynomial long division was able to tackle an application problem without any prompting by the end of the lesson.

Meanwhile, one younger student in Year 4 completed all her homework and even took on some extra-challenging extension questions she would have avoided just weeks ago, finishing them without needing help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We asked for assistance on a short term basis to help with some exam preparation.  Our tutor was quickly able to assess our daughter's capability and provide practical assistance with problem solving and techniques. Most importantly the tutor instilled real confidence in our daughter's ability, offering encouragement, support and reinforcement all the way.  We would not hesitate to contact Ezy Math for our future needs.

We are very happy with the tutoring work that Adedayo has done with Harrison so far. He has quickly formed a great rapport with Harrison and are they working very well together. Adedayo has been very encouraging and has managed to give Harrison confidence in his abilities even though they have only had a few sessions together. Harrison looks forward to his tutoring and has positive approach to sitting down and working with Adedayo. We look forward to continuing the tutoring arrangements and positive outcomes for Harrison.

We are very happy with Aurelius, he has turned something that was "like another language" (according to Aaron) into something he understands and has found his first test easy. We intend to hold onto Aurelius for as long as he wants to coach Aaron.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh Grammar.
