Tutor can be patient with their student and let them learn at their pace. Also, I believe a tutor should NEVER spoon fed but rather act like a mentor, guiding and helping if and only where it is required. I'm patient with students and understand that each student is different and have their own learning pace. I take pride in my ability to break…

To begin with, a tutor must encourage a student to do better and learn from previous mistakes. Getting upset/impatient with a student is only going to discourage the student and prevent him/her from reaching potential; and that's the opposite of the desired goal. In addition, confidence has to be built in a student; this way a student will be able…

I think it goes without saying that a tutor should help their student/s to understand concepts so that the student can improve on their grades. But I believe that tutoring goes so much further beyond that. A tutor should strive to truly engage the student in their learning. A good tutor will motivate and inspire the student so that they are…

Teach in an understandable, motivating, and enjoyable way. Crucial factors for efficient learning (things as relibaility, punctuality and so on) are all obvious and mandatory to me. Finally, every student has his / her own ways of learning / understanding things, and it is clearly the job of the tutor to find out the most efficient one, to let the…

Build their confidence so they can solve problems independently, like debugging code on their own. I consider patience to be the most important virtue in a tutor, setting small checkpoints between certain topics is a good strategy. A tutor should always pause and ask if the student has any questions or doubts about the concept. A tutor should make the student feel comfortable around them and they should not hesitate to ask any questions - no…

There can be concepts that a student may be shy to ask their teacher, but I want to be the tutor for them that they can transparently ask their tiniest doubts and absorb the knowledge in the best way possible. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them believe in their own ability to learn. When a student gains confidence, they become more willing to try, make mistakes, and keep going — and that’s when real progress happens. A tutor’s job isn’t just to explain concepts, but to create a safe space where the student…

Inside Huntleys PointTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Rose worked on classifying angles and triangles, as well as practicing rounding with larger numbers up to the millions.

Year 8 student Jess focused on trigonometry basics, learning how to use sine, cosine, and tangent in right-angled triangle problems, and practiced rearranging equations for linear relationships using graphing techniques.

Imogen (Year 7) revised adding and subtracting fractions, including improper fractions and mixed numerals, while also tackling lowest common multiples and highest common factors through practical examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tended to avoid showing working for algebra and factorisation, especially with "simpler" steps; as a tutor noted, "she skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors." This led to small mistakes going unnoticed until the end of questions.

In contrast, a Year 4 student hesitated when faced with mixed times tables and sometimes reverted to finger-counting under pressure—this slowed her progress during mental arithmetic drills.

Both students occasionally lost confidence after minor setbacks, resulting in extra time spent double-checking answers rather than moving forward confidently with new material.

Recent Achievements

A Huntleys Point tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with complex algebra now methodically checks her multi-step solutions and even corrects minor errors on her own.

In Year 8, another student who once avoided asking questions now regularly seeks clarification during lessons, especially when tackling trickier Pythagoras' theorem problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled to recall times tables can now complete all six times table questions—both in and out of order—with perfect accuracy and has started applying new mental strategies for harder multiplication problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverside Girls High School.
