I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them not only build the skills they need for the subject they're being tutored in, but also to build the skills to be confident of themselves within it as well. From my experience being tutored both in maths and for an instrument, that was something my tutors helped me with,…

Inside Hurstville GroveTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Clancy focused on dividing and multiplying fractions, building confidence through step-by-step examples.

For Year 9, Jack worked on geometry by proving triangles are congruent using logical reasoning, as well as practising solving for the unknown in algebraic equations.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Lachlan concentrated on mastering all operations with fractions—including the reciprocal rule—and strengthened skills with real-world fraction problems.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, a student was regularly reminded to practice the 6, 7, 8, and 9 times tables but left these incomplete at home. This meant that time in sessions was spent reviewing old ground rather than building new skills.

For a Year 10 student preparing for the HSC, "concentration is probably the greatest challenge"—with focus lapsing during longer tasks like probability questions, which led to unfinished problems.

In Year 11 algebra revision, one student hesitated to write out working due to perfectionism; as noted: "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors."

Recent Achievements

One Hurstville Grove tutor recently noticed a shift with Lachlan, a high school student who used to hesitate during maths sessions—he's now confidently verbalising his answers and asking for extra practice, especially with fractions and the reciprocal rule.

In chemistry, Rogan managed to connect key concepts by himself for the first time, particularly understanding why valency matters in reactions—a topic he'd previously struggled to piece together.

Meanwhile, Arianna (Year 7) has started persisting through mixed problem sets instead of skipping tricky questions, showing more determination and completing her set without giving up partway through.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very happy with the service, the professionalism of Malmi and the feedback and report. I have recommended you as a tutoring service to families that I see as clients.

Thanks very much and particularly to Maya. She is a really good tutor and a great influence on Chloe.

Deepti has been working with my daughter on her year 9 Maths this year and we have seen a great improvement in both her skill level and her confidence. Deepti is very reliable, friendly and professional and I can highly recommend her skills as a tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oatley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
