I can adjust my teaching according to each student's situation and issues. Different students may have vastly different gaps in their knowledge, it is important for tutors to plan their teaching accordingly to provide efficient help. I aim to devote effort in identifying these gaps and adapt my methods accordingly. I can also provide students…

I believe that each student is different and so is their learning method. The ability to understand that and alternate the teaching style to cater for it is most important. I believe my strengths would be clear and concise communication. The ability to break down concepts and deliver them linking to real world examples so that students understand…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can be to a student is patient and kind. This is because there could be a particular concept the student is struggling with, so the tutor needs to be able to help them learn and improve on that topic. Being patient and kind in explaining it to the student is, therefore, an important part of doing so.…

Most important thing is understanding what the students need and help them according to their needs. I have effective communication skills so this can be achieved thoroughly. Then by knowing what the student needs I am able to focus on the problems that the student face and come up with solutions to solve those problems. These problems are in a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

I believe going the extra mile to ensure that a student has the proper understanding is primordial. In the past, I have dealt with tough students with patience and empathy, clearing my students’ doubts and making them gain an in – depth understanding of the subject. I prefer to portray myself more a friend than a tutor and reassure my students…

In my point of view, a good tutor should be a good listener to students. The tutor should able to fix the student's queries. The qualities like patient, flexible, openness and active are important things for a tutor because the student will observe the tutor and we may influence them at some point. so, it is essential for a tutor to have good…

In school, the subject teacher need to face a relatively large group of students, so their teaching style and pace of lesson are more inclined to fit the majority but not everyone. Therefore when it comes to private tuition, the tutor conducting one-to-one lesson can focus on the student himself and personalize the lesson in a way that this…

With one to one teaching a tutor can help a student on a deeper level than in a classroom setting, allowing them to feel they can ask about anything they're not sure on without any fear of the rest of the class judging them. Understanding how children learn on an individual basis (including factoring in neurodivergency) rather than a blanket…

Change of a student's viewpoint towards a subject. Once the attitude is changed rest is easy. Science is the study of natural laws and math is the universal language. We are studying nature in science and writing it down in math. It is very important for a student to feel connection to a subject. Not every student has the same thought process,…

Inside IvanhoeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Nicholas explored percentages and worked through how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages using real-world examples.

In Year 8, Sarah practiced adding and subtracting negative numbers as well as multiplying, dividing, and adding fractions, reinforcing these skills with written exercises.

For Year 11 English, Bradley focused on planning comparative essays for texts such as Ransom and The Queen, building detailed mind maps for themes and practicing language analysis by annotating past VCE exam articles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, one student struggled to plan and structure essays, often hesitating to share strong ideas due to second-guessing. As a tutor noted, "she was able to come up with some great ideas but needed help drawing them out into a well-rounded essay response," leading to missed opportunities for deeper analysis and textual evidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 mathematics student frequently skipped writing steps when solving equations, opting instead for mental calculations; this habit made it difficult to identify errors and slowed progress on more complex problems.

In both cases, valuable class time was spent reworking responses rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One Ivanhoe tutor noticed a high school student who, after previously needing prompts to find relevant evidence for essays, was able to independently select and integrate supporting quotes during a practice assessment—showing real growth in applying textual analysis.

Another senior student, initially reluctant to ask for clarification, has started leading discussions and confidently planning essay responses out loud, especially when comparing themes across texts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who often made "silly mistakes" is now working through multiplication problems aloud and double-checking her answers before moving on, resulting in far fewer errors.
