The most important thing is to communicate on a level that is with the students so they can understand the topics you are teaching, so they still feel connected and engaged in learning. In addition, also having a variety of strategies as one size does not fit all so it is about finding the best fit for each student. My strength is to provide…

Being understanding and open minded may perhaps be the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student. Every student has varying strengths and limits and thus following the same approach may not have the desired result. Thus, being patient and having more than one explanation may prove in handy and help make a student develop trust in the…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. To be able to connect with the kids/student, making an environment where they are excited and enjoy studying, while being able to speak up on their doubts. I connect with the kids quite well. A quality, which I believe tutors should give their students is confidence. The key to mastering any formula or topic is being confident enough to put oneself forward and try it. After all, we cannot find out their strengths or weaknesses without giving a question a shot. A tutor can improve their student’s confidence through repeated practice,…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
