A tutor is there to build confidence, in my opinion. Regardless of the comments of parents, teachers, siblings, a tutor should believe in their students and empower them to perform at the highest level capable. That is what the best tutors achieved for me, and what I continue to do for my own students today. I think the best tutors, particularly…

According to me, a tutor can help his student improve and be a stepping stone in achieving his goals . A tutor can make his student be a better person , and can inculcate the genuine love of learning and knowledge and showing others what it looks like to be passionate about his future. Sharing knowledge with the students is the main thing but…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to encourage, support and develop confidence in their ability. It is vitally important to also be patient and understand that not all students learn at the same pace which is the main reason I prefer to teach one-to-one, adapting my lessons to the individual student's needs. I believe I…

The goal of tutoring, in some sense, should be to equip students with the skills to no longer need tutoring. I believe this is best achieved by allowing the student to choose study-related goals, and help them take achievable steps in order to get there. As their competence increases in proximity to the larger goal, so too does their confidence as…

A tutor should be a mentor for students. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to allow the student to feel free to ask questions and to query explanations. The most important thing a tutor can do is NOT to give the students answers. This is a red line for me as it limits the student's ability to use their mind to explore and thus tackle hard questions. My strengths are that I am open minded and persistent; I am never one to criticise a student for not understanding how to do something no matter how…

In my point of view, a good tutor should be a good listener to students. The tutor should able to fix the student's queries. The qualities like patient, flexible, openness and active are important things for a tutor because the student will observe the tutor and we may influence them at some point. so, it is essential for a tutor to have good…

Most importantly, the tutor should be able to help the student achieve their desired academic results whilst under the tutor's tutelage, as this is the whole purpose of being a tutor. However, it is almost equally important to instill confidence in a student, that they will feel comfortable enough to step out of their comfort zones. More often…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. Alex has been a great tutor for my son. He is patient, encouraging and explains things clearly. My son feels feels so much more confident in Maths thanks to Alex!
Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
