Based on my experience, I would love to help my students to find out the most appropriate study method for them. As I was in secondary school, science subjects were not my preferable subjects at all. I learnt it by heart and completely did not understand the theories behind at all. My method was not appropriate as it is more suitable for…

The most important thing a tutor could do is to understand the student they are teaching. Not all students are the same and their needs aren't either. So knowing them can help the student grow in their studies. I am currently studying a Bachelors of Education (Secondary) and Bachelors of Science, as such I have both the theoretical knowledge of…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to understand that they are essentially human beings, and should be treated as such. Therefore, a friendly peer-to-peer approach should be taken in place of a paternal one. In addition, care should be taken to promote their independent cognitive abilities rather than, however…

Listening with patience. Teaching isn't a one way process. The student and the tutor both need to engage with each other. Ability to assess the current level of understanding of the student and then grooming him/her to reach a desired level of excellence. Also, the ability to simplify complex concepts and keep the students motivated and…

I believe every student has their own way of learning, so I focus on building a study routine that works for them — whether it’s setting up a realistic revision schedule, practicing exam-style questions, or using targeted strategies to tackle procrastination. My approach is to pinpoint their strengths, address any gaps, and equip them with…

I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do is guide and support a student in their knowledge. For me, I found it the most helpful when a tutor was able to provide formulas or structures for solving problems, which allowed me to tackle whatever questions I was tasked me. As a student, I have a love of learning and an innate sense of…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. Nothing is stronger than a photographic memory, explaining things and concepts in a flow diagram or figure form will help students to retain more information. My most important things that I would do for a student would be to adapt to the way that they learn rather than using a one-size-fits-all method as every student learns differently and does things in a certain way in order for them to succeed. Another critical point is developing a mindset and motivation that focuses on learning and then…

To help them become confident and self-sufficient in the subject! I work to fill the gaps in knowledge that often hold students back from achieving all they are capable of. Beyond simply helping a student improve their grades, I believe a tutor should aim to further engage their students in their learning and to actively enjoy school. At the end of the day, all the work in the learning process is done by the student, my main goal as a tutor is to get them started in such process, to catalyse the natural drive we all have to understand the world around us. I always aim to be enthusiastic, patient and empathetic, trying to…

Alex has been a great tutor for my son. He is patient, encouraging and explains things clearly. My son feels feels so much more confident in Maths thanks to Alex!
Lauren, Kew East

Inside Kew EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alex focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as converting them to improper fractions, practicing with visual examples.

In Year 8, Emily tackled algebraic equations involving multiple operations to solve for x and worked through inequalities step by step.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack prepared for an upcoming test by working through surface area and volume questions, using real-life cylinder examples to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, hesitation to draft ideas led to frequent pauses; as a tutor observed, "he often waited for reassurance before writing, which slowed his argument planning."

During a Year 11 maths session on compound interest, skipping double-checks of formulas meant answers didn't match the scenario's time frame.

In Year 7 algebra, working was mostly done in his head—steps weren't written out, so mistakes were harder to spot.

For a primary student practicing fractions, messy layout made it tricky to track simplification steps.

Each moment brought visible frustration when confidence dipped after an error.

Recent Achievements

One Kew East tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rush through algebra now stopping to check his work against a list of self-made questions, catching mistakes before moving on.

Another high school student recently tackled compound interest problems solo for the first time, after previously needing step-by-step guidance every session.

Meanwhile, in Year 4, a student who would avoid writing tasks managed to plan and write an entire persuasive piece in one go and even remembered to structure it using TEEL—something he'd struggled with before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kew Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Anne's School.
