Being a tutor, one can do a lot of things for a student apart from teaching. A tutor has the responsibility of mentoring the students in career and general life. The tutor should be empathetic and able to understand the student to provide relevant support. I am a high achiever myself. Being a uni student, I can relate to the students' problems in…

As a tutor, it is very important to be a source of encouragement for each student equally and make them believe in themselves to be successful(success-as defined by each person and not according to the standards of the general public). I also believe it is important to acknowledge the effort of each child, appreciate them where it is…

I consider the two most important things for a tutor to do are to first inspire confidence in the student and identify the area of difficulty as precisely as possible. Students are generally not equipped to identify the precise area of their difficulty as they don't have the knowledge to fully place it in the context of the subject. By…

I strongly want my students to…

Lisa is amazing maths tutor and very polite and lovely person! She is so well organised and her encouraging approach is much appreciated. My daughter was so happy with Lisa's tutoring and she said that nobody ever explained maths to her so well.

Inside KilkennyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Elousia built confidence with multiplication tables up to 12 and practiced clear, well-spaced handwriting while writing a book review using new vocabulary.

For Year 8, James focused on rearranging linear equations and inequalities as well as graphing linear equations by hand, then revised Pythagoras' theorem and square roots.

In Year 12 English, Sarah worked on structuring essays using TEEL paragraphs and planned ideas for her analysis of Fly Away Peter in preparation for exam conditions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student often skipped writing out working steps and relied on "just seeing the answer," as noted: "she needed constant reminding to show all rearranging processes." This led to hidden errors in equations.

A Year 7 learner was observed losing focus easily during geometry tasks, sometimes guessing answers rather than carefully thinking through them, resulting in repeated mistakes that were hard to trace back.

Meanwhile, in a primary-level maths session, incomplete workbook exercises meant gaps in basic skills persisted—one tutor reported having to finish problems together instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

One Kilkenny tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously tended to guess at answers is now taking time to write out steps and check her work, especially on square root and rearrangement problems—showing much more care with process than before.

In a recent Year 7 session, a student who often hesitated to ask for help began talking through her thought process aloud when stuck, which helped her solve homework worded questions independently.

Meanwhile, an upper primary student has become confident recalling tricky times tables and now uses the bathroom wall chart at home to reinforce learning between lessons.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Civic Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Whitefriars School.
