Learning is a key to understanding and appreciating the complex beauty of life - enriching the life of the individual. It is one of the key foundations a tutor can establish for their students. A child who has failed to 'keep up' with learning, to understand a concept or course of study, will tend to drop further behind, and attempt to mask…

One of the most important things that a tutor can do for their students is create a safe learning environment for them where they are not judged and can openly ask questions as I believe this will truly allow them to gain deep understanding in the content they are learning which is what I think is crucial in any learning aspect as understanding is…

I consider the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to give them confidence in their own ability to learn and foster independence by teaching skills and strategies not just content. My strengths in tutoring our patience, kindness, a willingness to try to understand how a student learns best, a sense of humour and hard work and…

As a tutor, it is important not to be restrictive in your approach and to have flexibility. Being able to personalise your approach, trying out different ways of teaching and altering it to suit the student is necessary to make them feel more at ease when learning as well as bringing out the best in them. Rather than students catering to us, we…

I think the most improtant thing as a tutor is to answer the student's question as best as you can, and to make sure they can understand. And we should also encourage our student to try, even if they get the wrong answers, because practice makes the perfect. I'm very patience, and easy to communicate, and I can figure out different ways to explain…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to guide them instead of doing the work for them. It is important for the students to feel that they have control over what they are learning and for them to be encouraged through feedback and practice. I am a very patient, determined and creative person. I can understand what a student…

To be patient, understanding and always willing to go back to the basics and refresh their memory and to get the work to fit together. But mostly the tutor must be someone who the student is comfortable with and able to ask any questions or queries however small or silly they may think they might be. Allowing students to become independent thinkers and restorning their self confidence is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. This means while you guide them in filling gaps in knowledge and breaking down difficult concepts, the tutor is able to build these fundamental skills in the student. In instilling these skills, I…

Improving the confidence of the student is key. The student should evolve to have more trust in themselves and their abilities and be able to apply this. The most important thing I could do for the student is to help them achieve their own personal best and be motivated to achieve. I am a good listener. I apply this to pinpointing the key areas…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, is to believe in them. When a child's role model believes in them they begin to believe in themselves and, I believe, that is the first step to accomplishing great things. If a child believes that they have the ability to do something they are more inclined to put more effort…

Provide adequate resources on the subject so the student can go back over them when not being tutored. Also make sure they understand the content and don’t leave the session feeling confused or lost about anything, all while showing…

Focus - be structured and strict when the need arises, to keep the student on track with their goals. My strengths would be my enthusiasm for learning,…

I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to cultivate the interest and engagement of the students. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not just tell a student the answers for everything, but to teach them how to solve it for themselves, and to help them gain the skills to learn and understand on their own, so even if I stop teaching them, they will be stronger on their own. Encourage and empower the student to continue learning and believe that they can learn the content they are about to learn. Inside Kilsyth SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Aiden focused on positive and negative integers as well as BODMAS, building accuracy with step-by-step practice.

In Year 10, Sarah worked through binomial and normal probability distributions, using real-life examples to strengthen her understanding of statistical models.

For VCE Maths Methods, Year 12 student Ethan tackled differentiation techniques including chain, product, and quotient rules alongside advanced circular functions, reinforcing concepts through targeted exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student missed several early classes, which made it difficult to grasp new content—"she needs more than 2 hours a week of tutoring to cover the contents she has missed."

In Year 11 Maths Methods, one student forgot key log and exponent rules during revision; this often slowed progress on exam questions.

For a Year 8 class, homework was left incomplete ("no homework"), causing gaps in learning from week to week.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with area and volume problems as he "could not remember and implement his area and volume rules," leading to confusion when laying out solutions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Kilsyth South noticed one high school student who was initially hesitant to ask for help now regularly raises questions and talks through tricky maths problems aloud, instead of quietly guessing.

Another Year 12 student, who previously got stuck on worded differentiation problems, was able to tackle all but one advanced question independently this week, applying techniques from earlier lessons without needing step-by-step guidance.

In a recent primary session, a younger student who once struggled with focus worked steadily through every set task and even asked for extra homework when he finished early.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Bayswater Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bayswater North Primary School.
