I think a tutor can bring out the inner talent of a student. Suppose a student who could not able to gain a good marks in exams or failing continuously, I will give that student mental support. I will give him or her motivation by telling that you can achieve anything in your life by doing hardworking. The most important thing is that a tutor can…

A tutor is beyond someone that can just teach some topics to students, but they are someone that the student looks upto, and feels comfortable sharing their weaknesses to. It is essential for for the tutor to understand the child’s needs, and cater to those specifically. My strengths are that i have recently graduated high school, so I am very…

Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. I think the most important thing is to adhere to the students needs and their form of learning. If a student is more of a visual learner then I would adapt my teaching style to suit them. I also feel that being available after class hours for queries and concerns is vital but also be able to provide guidance and a good role model not only…

I would say the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is helping them grow as individuals, and help them find a love for learning - a strong passion for the academic studies. A tutor needs to also serve as a good role model for the students, and be a person the student can trust to help them improve their grades. I would say my…

The important thing a tutor can do for a student is make them feel more confident about their abilities and knowledge. The more they can back them-self, the more they can be composed in a test environment, the better they perform in test conditions, the better their marks. Like a positive feedback loop, this will also increase confidence;better…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to break a concept down to its simplest form. In my school days, I often found this to be the easiest way to learn. If your basic foundation of any concept is strong, it gets much easier to build on that and learn more complex information pertaining to it. Moreover, being…

I can make the student not only competent, but also comfortable and confident in a certain topic. I understand how stressful hard subjects can be. I want to take away the feeling of fear when students enter a class they think they're not good in. Another thing is teaching a student to be an autodidact. I was fortunate enough to know this tactic…

First, I think a tutor should have good subject and curriculum knowledge so that they may be able to provide as much information as they can towards the kids. I think communication skills is another important thing a tutor must have (the way they explain the topics so that it is easy for the students to understand). Finally a tutor must be patient…

Personalize learning and teach the student specific to their learning style. Listen and teach. I think it is so important for students to be listened to and helped accordingly. They must be given the space to work through problems they are facing themselves so that they can believe in their own abilities and increase their own self-efficacy. I believe that student's can generally pick up on whether a tutor is invested in them quite quickly. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is actively show them that they do in fact want them, as an individual, to do better than they've ever done before and show interest in them as a person. I am very good at picking up on what…

Inside Kings ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Ben tackled ratios and rates of change using real-life examples, while Year 9 student Maya focused on calculating measures of central tendency and exploring variance and distribution in data sets.

For Year 6, Olivia practiced interpreting images to answer inferential questions and read short texts to build her skills in drawing conclusions from written clues, also solving maths word problems involving addition and subtraction.

Recent Challenges

Distraction and loss of focus were key challenges in both primary and high school lessons.

For example, as a tutor noted, "Olly gets distracted and off topic very easily," which led to needing direct answers instead of practicing inferencing in Year 5 reading and maths.

In Year 11 Maths, forgetting to write units or skipping written working created confusion during problem-solving with rates of change.

Several students did not consistently complete or remember homework for revision—one high schooler "sometimes has difficulty remembering the concepts taught previously," especially when workings weren't recorded, resulting in repeated gaps during algebra practice.

Recent Achievements

One Kings Park tutor recently saw a Year 11 student move from confusion to confidence with powers and square roots—after reviewing her earlier questions, she worked through new problems independently without needing hints.

In another high school session, Jurgen had previously been making "silly mistakes" in algebra, but after focusing on study strategies and self-checking, he began identifying errors himself before the tutor pointed them out.

Meanwhile, Olly (Year 3) surprised his tutor by looking up unfamiliar word definitions during reading time instead of waiting for help, showing real initiative that hadn't been there before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Subiaco Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rosalie Primary School.
