I believe that a good tutor's primary goal is to utilise everything at their disposal to convert concepts into tangible and engaging topics and enthuse their students. Thus, I believe motivation is the fuel for accomplishing great results. With tutoring, we can help students to build confidence by tackling their academic fears and as a result,…

The most important thing I could do for my students is to inspire them through learning. For example, students can understand the complex topic better through application to daily situations. In Mathematics, this will better prepare them for complex questions and PSMTs as students will be learning real life applications as well as problem solving…

To prepare for class and constantly check up on their progress. Students often need help outside of class, which lots of tutors do not provide. I am always accessible outside of class hours, ensuring students get help whenever they need it. Another important thing is to motivate the student. From my perspective, I feel the least and most important thing a tutor can do is to make sure that the student is 100% clear with all the content that is being gone through during the lesson. That is, the student is able to complete similar type of questions with 100% confidence. In order to achieve that, the tutor needs to adjust the pace of…

I consider a tutors ability to boost a students confidence and self esteem in an area one of the most important things. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure a student can fully understand topics that have previously been difficult. I believe that the purpose of a tutor is to tailor their teaching as closely as possible to the needs of every individual student; tutors should never take a one-size fits all approach to teaching. Olivia, Underwood

Inside KurabyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7, Ella focused on decimal addition and subtraction as well as practicing both 2 x 2 digit and 3 x 2 digit multiplication; meanwhile, Year 8, Marcus worked through order of operations in word problems and solved volume questions involving measurement conversions.

In senior Biology, Year 11 student Lily reviewed karyotype interpretation and discussed the roles of different RNAs in protein synthesis alongside constructing energy flow diagrams for ecosystems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student's maths work showed a tendency to skip setting out full working for complex equations, making it difficult to catch errors—"his thinking for these questions was correct, but layout needs work."

In Year 11 Biology, another student did not spend enough time reading studies in detail before analysis, which slowed progress on the research investigation.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner often guessed answers rather than using drawings or calculations when tackling multiplication and word problems.

In each case, rushed or incomplete processes led to confusion or repeated mistakes during practice and revision.

Recent Achievements

A Kuraby tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid exam-style biology questions now confidently summarising the process of nondisjunction in her own words when prompted, showing real ownership of complex genetics content.

In Year 8 maths, another student who previously struggled with setting out calculations is now consistently writing complete expressions for worded problems and double-checking unit conversions independently.

Meanwhile, a younger learner who would guess times tables answers has begun using anchor facts and visual patterns to solve unfamiliar multiplication questions, choosing strategies herself without prompting from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Logan North Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kuraby State School.
