Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. Finding unique ways to interpret notes and…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence and foster a love for learning. Every child learns at their own pace, and as a tutor, it’s essential to be patient, supportive, and encouraging. I think for a tutor it's being able to be contacted even after lesson hours. As for maths, it's very difficult to find solutions online and last minute stress before an exam is not good, so I think being available to be contacted and being flexible is the most important thing for a tutor. I like to make the classes interactive and fun to keep…

Encouragement and being able to explain concepts in a digestible manner are what makes a good tutor, but a great tutor checks in on students to make sure that they are thriving. It takes courage and self-reflection to find a tutor in the first place, so the least a tutor can do is make sure to give the tools for a student to make it on their…

Being patient with the student when introducing new ideas. Learn with the student. I am striving to be a better person each day, with it, comes humility. I believe that if you come to the student appearing human and able to make mistakes (as I am not a robot), the student will understand that I am not intimidating nor a machine, but rather human just like they are. Building a strong and humane connection…

The most important thing I think a tutor can do for a student is to help teach them in a safe, non-judgemental and trust worthy environment. Inside Little BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Ethan practiced multiplying and dividing fractions, then moved on to solving perimeter and area problems for composite shapes using diagrams.

For Year 8, Olivia worked through expanding algebraic brackets and applied these skills to more complex equations, with a focus on clear setting out of her working.

In Year 10, Sam reviewed trigonometry concepts including the sine and cosine rules, reinforcing understanding by tackling exam-style questions involving real-world contexts.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 maths, one student's written work was still messy and hard to follow, making it difficult to spot calculation errors when tackling fractions.

A Year 10 student delayed sharing assessment deadlines until the last minute; as a tutor noted, "their assessment was due that very day," which left no time for targeted support.

In senior English, another student received feedback but only made minimal changes to reading comprehension tasks rather than addressing the core suggestions. This meant valuable strategies weren't applied before practice exams.

Recent Achievements

A Little Bay tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who used to freeze up at simultaneous equations now working through them independently, even explaining her steps aloud without prompting.

In another session, a Year 8 student who had trouble remembering formulas began recalling key content and could apply it in new problems with little hesitation.

Meanwhile, a primary school student—who was previously reluctant to ask questions—started openly admitting when he felt stuck and asked for help on tricky perimeter challenges. Last week, he finished all ten practice problems on his own after seeking guidance just once.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Malabar Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like La Perouse Public School.
