A tutor can play a very important role in motivating the student so that he can understand and achieve. Thus, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instilling a strong belief in them that they can achieve whatever they want, provided they are giving their best. Most of the subjects that I have listed, I love studying them. I am…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

I think encouraging students to develop self-learning skills plays the important role in educational networks as we cannot tutor them forever. We should not only assist students only to understand the materials provided but also teach them the skills of how to learn effectively and what to do when encountering the new lesson/content of knowledge…

Well I think a tutor most important piece they can do for a student is take them from where they are to a place where they’re performing better in what they would like too. No matter where they are at whether it is passing to doing well or doing well to smashing it. I also think it’s about finding ways in which the student learns best. I think…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

A tutor is someone that the student can feel comfortable, confident whilst being in a welcoming environment to ask and reach out about any questions regarding schooling subjects, and as well a support network to help build their pathway to reach their own successes. I consider the following as critical things a tutor can do for a student: - Ability to empathise with the student. This helps with connecting with the students, and creates a safe learning space for them - Ability to listen. In the classroom settings, some teachers are unable to connect with all the students due to the large number and rigid…

I think a good tutor can make studies feel like a piece of cake rather than rocket science. I think as a tutor it is my job to foster critical thinking and problem solving skills, so that a student can develop independent ideas and eventually become confident in the subject. My greatest strength is my ability to differentiate instruction to meet…

The most important things to a student are when their tutor is honest, patient, a good listener, and confident in their teaching. A tutor should be patient and understanding of a student's mistakes. A tutor should also help to develop skills for a student to understand a concept, not just remember it, and build on a student's ability to learn independently. Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
