The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

Being understanding and open minded may perhaps be the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student. Every student has varying strengths and limits and thus following the same approach may not have the desired result. Thus, being patient and having more than one explanation may prove in handy and help make a student develop trust in the…

I believe that the best thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with the self-confidence and self-belief to persevere through any difficulties they may face in their academics. This can be done through the gradual withdrawal of support as the student grows in their skills and confidence. Once the student has established their…

A tutor must be able to understand the student first, and according to the student, he should be able to change and adapt to the current situation and respond according to the needs of the students, rather than having a constant set of rules or agenda to the way of teaching. I am good at demonstrating concepts in my own way, rather than going in a…

Build a relationship with the student. If you can make the sessions enjoyable then the student will be more likely to engage and try to improve. Patience, lots of students don't understand the concepts straight away and therefore you need to be patient with them to help them achieve their goals. I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is make the student feel truly listened to. When a student feels heard and understood, they gain confidence. I also believe it's about helping them fall in love with the subject not just memorise it. If they can connect with the topic and see its value or beauty in some way, learning becomes…

I believe that the most important things which a tutor can do for a student are these: to stress the need for forward planning and for regular timetables; to encourage where necessary; to break down large tasks into manageable portions; and to clarify hitherto obscure matters. A tutor should be patient and supportive. Every child sets his/her own pace of doing things and sometimes they might not get it right, so it is important to be understanding. I think the most important thing, is that you not only teach students. You learn to grow with them, you make sure that your students are able to be successful, and you are a small contributor to that success, but along the way, you grow with them, you understand the way they learn, so that you could learn with them. I think that my strengths, are…

It sounds basic but it is a common error made by tutors. Making sure that the student understands more than just how to solve the problem. Answering the questions a student asks as they only ask if they truly do not understand a particular part and as a tutor its our duty to make them understand. A key for tutoring is to have patience to guide someone no matter how slow a person understands the particular subject and I do have that key. Plus, I would take the responsibility making…

Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
