I think tutors need to be able to diagnose the cause of why a student does not understand something, so good communication skills are essential. However, having a good enough understanding of the content to be able to explain it in multiple ways is also a critical skill, whether that be graphically, numerically, with an analogy, or in several…

Give the student the confidence they need to do well by providing them with tools and knowledge that they can use to succeed. I am a good listener so I am able identify problem areas that a student might have. I am also really good at offering multiple ways of solving a problem. I communicate well with students of different aptitudes and make…

A tutor's role is to help students understand key concepts and apply them confidently, leading to growth in both understanding and academic performance. Ultimately, though, I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is help students develop confidence in their own abilities and nurture a genuine curiosity and love of learning that…

To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. In short, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be for tutors to ensure that students are confident in how they approach a problem. My strengths as a tutor, I would say,…

Whilst an understanding of the content is important, tutors should understand the way they present examples and what these examples include can stress students or cause them to have misconceptions. They should be willing to extend the understanding of students but understand the dangers of pushing a student "too hard." Personally I used to be…

A tutor should be patient and engaging with the student to maintain a good learning atmosphere where the student can question even the slightest of misunderstandings in any concept or question of a certain subject. Moreover, being flexible with timings can also be very important for a student as they will be focusing on other subjects as well.…

The most important thing a tutor can do is provide a safe open learning environment where the student is actually comfortable to ask questions. I remember sometimes with bad teachers I would be hesitant to ask questions because I was embarrassed that I didn’t know said thing. I want to instil confidence in my students so they are able to ask…

I believe that teachers/tutors make the greatest impact on a developing child or young adult's mind. Apart from the child's family, a teacher/tutor has the most influential face to face contact with a student, where it be as a mentor or as a friend. Hence, I strongly feel that tutors have the opportunity and responsibility to educate and develop a…

Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is helping them improve their academics and achieve the highest goal in their ability. I think the most important job of a tutor is to help the student, not just in answering questions, but by giving them a fundamental understanding of the content that they would be able to reapply to many other questions, particularly ones that are curveballs. Apart from that, giving them the belief that they can do well if they just apply…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

A tutor should always analyse the strengths and weaknesses of their students. This will provide a detailed insight to the tutors on which areas to particularly focus on. Furthermore, based on the strengths and weaknesses of each student, a tutor can prepare a routine for the students in order to enhance their knowledge in those subjects where the…

Inside Malvern EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alex focused on solving linear equations with pro-numerals on both sides and expanding brackets using the BIDMAS order of operations.

For Year 9, Mia practised graphing straight lines by solving for 'y', calculating gradients, and identifying x- and y-intercepts from equations.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Phoebe worked through finding the mean, median, and mode for grouped data to prepare for her upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

Device readiness and organisation continue to impact progress. In one recent Year 10 session, her uncharged laptop meant lost access to schoolwork—limiting revision options and causing frustration.

"Her organisational methods are ineffective and unsustainable," noted a tutor after another lesson; worksheets were scattered and notes hard to locate, slowing review of algebra topics.

In VCE Maths, over-reliance on the calculator appeared: she defaulted to it for basic quadratic problems rather than practicing manual techniques.

These moments left her less able to check answers independently or recall strategies under test conditions, sometimes leading to avoidable confusion in multi-step worded questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Malvern East noticed that a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints during algebra is now independently recalling the correct formulas and finishing problem sets without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who previously hesitated to tackle new topics now openly volunteers to attempt trigonometry questions first—showing real initiative compared to her earlier reluctance.

At primary level, one student who once struggled with focus has begun reviewing last week's maths concepts on her own before sessions, leading to more confident participation and quicker recall when prompted by the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Phoenix Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like De La Salle College - Holy Eucharist Campus.
