Give the student confidence. Confidence either to persist with the hard work till they hit a breakthrough or the confidence to thing around the problems. There are a lot of students who don't lack in talent and just a couple little things are holding them back. Solving those can really help them grow. I am able to seperate a topic into byte sized…

According to me the most important trait in a tutor is patience. It is not necessary that each child learns at the same pace. A tutor should also possess the ability to create and provide problem statements which help the student to get a grip over the topic. Along with a good speaker a tutor must be a good listener making the session more…

The most important thing that a tutor can do is to pivot their teaching style in order to suit not only the content but how the student learns. Without this ability to change as necessary you are putting your students at a significant disadvantage. Breaking down complex concepts into simple ideas. Creating a comfortable learning environment where…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, adapt to their learning style, and make learning engaging. A tutor should not just provide answers but guide students to think critically and understand concepts deeply. As a tutor, my strengths lie in my ability to explain complex concepts in a simple and…

I believe a tutor should not only help a student academically but also boost their confidence and foster a love for learning. A good tutor builds trust and encourages independent thinking that will equip students with the tools and mindset they need to succeed for the long-term. My strengths are that I am patient, the ability to break down…

I believe it is most important for a tutor to tailor their teaching according to the needs of their student. Many students learn in different ways such as visual or through different compounding activities to build a strong foundation before moving on to more difficult concepts. I believe being able to teach a student in the way that is most…

A student will need a tutor because he/she couldn't understand what was being taught in class. The best thing for a tutor to do is focus on the parts that the student failed to understand and strengthen their understanding in those areas. Anybody's hold on Science is only as good as their understanding of the basics. So, it is best to focus on the…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to: 1) Build strong, personal relationships with their students: a tutor should personalize the learning, make learning more interesting for the student, and teach to the student's strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. 2) Focus on goal setting, and creating benchmarks. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths and areas of improvement in particular to improve the student's overall performance in a particular subject area. Thus, I believe it is really important to enable the student to feel empowered about their learning through support and encouragement. This…

Being a medical student, I value how education builds an individual. Having the right mentors and teachers during one's educational journey can either make or break them. Students look up to their mentors and tutors for various reasons. Students already interact with teachers at school, so they require a friend who understands their problems and…

I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. The most important thing is trust that both tutor and student should have on each other. An ease of asking questions and making mistakes is another very important thing. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

Like I said, patience and comfortable environment created between the tutor and the student. Rest all can be taken care of by referring to the respective books and study materials. Interactive studies make students remember and understand topics really well. If a tutor can help the student to enjoy the subjects, then it becomes an activity which…

Inside ManninghamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Maim focused on mastering long division with three-digit numbers (including remainders up to 1000) and practised persuasive writing by developing arguments for "no homework."

Year 10 student Ethan worked through trigonometry concepts such as using sine, cosine, and tangent in right-angled triangles, as well as consolidating knowledge of coordinate geometry by plotting points and calculating gradients.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ava tackled statistics topics including interpreting data displays and finding mean, median, and mode from sample sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly avoided homework, and even claimed work was done when it hadn't been started; "she did not do any work after we finished the previous lesson and did not even appear to have added anything to the document." This meant concepts from algebra and assignments could not be reinforced between sessions, slowing progress.

In Year 3 maths, a student skipped multiplication practice set for homework, which made it harder to recall tables during lessons—relying instead on finger counting.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student hesitated to write independently, often giving up rather than attempting written responses when unsure.

Recent Achievements

One Manningham tutor noted a Year 8 student who used to get stuck on long division is now making very few mistakes and often corrects errors independently before moving on.

In senior maths, a Year 11 student recently finished a timed test under exam conditions, showing her full working for every question—this was the first time she managed it without rushing or skipping steps.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once mixed up '13' and '15' can now write all numbers accurately from 1 to 15 neatly and accurately with no help, even tackling pattern recognition activities using her own logic.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenacres Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hampstead Primary School.
