I think one of the most important things is for the tutor to be understanding and listen to the student's problems to be able to grasp what they are struggling with and aid them effectively. It is also useful for the tutor to build a good relationship with the student to help increase their strengths in learning and incorporate their interests I…

I think the best tutor is one who guides the students properly and fairly not only in their academics but also about life challenges. Most importantly a tutor should be ready to explain a single concept even 10 times to students if they are not able to get that without getting annoyed Well , I'm quite patient which I think is my biggest strength…

To understand how the child learns, and what they respond to best. As a teacher in a classroom may not be giving them the attention or understanding they require. I believe communication is my strongest strength, as my ability to communicate ideas and encourage children to do the same is corner stone to successful…

The most important things a tutor can do are to foster a supportive environment, encourage curiosity, and empower students to reach their full potential. A tutor should guide students to find solutions rather than providing them directly, enabling them to build independence and critical-thinking skills. By helping students develop efficient study…

A tutor should be patient and never say something is easy. They should always encourage and find ways to explain something step-by-step such that everything is explained and can be linked back to a central idea. I am patient, friendly, and I can see and understand why something can be difficult to understand. I encourage and can relate to finding…

Our modern world is built around education and every student can expect to experience a lot of it in the future. Therefore, it is most important that a tutor should model genuine interest in learning (both the subject matter and how to learn well), so that the student him/herself enjoys the process and is encouraged to become a lifelong learner.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is reassure them that it is perfectly normal to not understand a topic straight away. Tutors must make sure that students are not ashamed of needing help, and do not feel 'stupid' or 'dumb' for not understanding. I am a very patient person who is good at listening. When I am in a tutoring role…

For me, it is absolutely pertinent for tutors to build a rapport and gain trust from their student, which may encompass many different actions. It may involve giving subject advice from experience, being reassuring and having sound knowledge of the course and content. In doing so, tutors can aid students to develop a genuine interest in the…

Not to teach an exact method for solving a problem, but to teach methods which work for particular general types of problems- techniques which allow them to become more familiar with how mathematics works. I think that being able to build a rapport with the student is one of the fundamental skills to be a good tutor. This lays the foundation for the student being comfortable in asking questions to the tutor, as well as the tutor finding a teaching style that is most suited to the student. I am confident in my ability to explain subject matter to the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is ensure that the student has gained the ability to consolidate the information taught. 1. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them become more confident with themselves about their ability to achieve the grade they want in the subject they want. a tutor first needs to understand the capability of the student considering all the strengths and weakness and work on it. Only just transforming knowledge will not help the child grow but instead develop a liking for that particular subject will make that child understand it more easily. Temporary teaching does't work in this teaching field.…

Inside MarlestonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zara focused on comparing fractions using visual aids like pie diagrams and also practised solving Roman numerals.

Year 9 student Archie prepared for an upcoming test by tackling algebraic multiplication and worded questions from both his booklet and extra resources.

Meanwhile, Lachlan in Year 10 completed Pythagorean theorem exercises before beginning trigonometry with the sine rule, applying these skills to right-angled triangles as well as related problems from his electrician workbook.

Recent Challenges

Messy written work and disorganized materials slowed progress for a Year 7 student; as one tutor noted, "sheets and books were quite messy/disorganized—fixing this may help her keep track of instructions and tasks."

In Year 10 Maths, not reading assignment instructions closely led to confusion with scaling diagrams, causing errors in the final drawing.

A senior student in Year 11 struggled to extract key information from worded problems, leading to repeated misunderstandings of what questions required.

In each case, missed or unclear process steps meant time was spent clarifying instructions rather than advancing on new concepts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Marleston recently noticed some real breakthroughs across different students.

In Year 10, Tia has started catching her own mistakes during trigonometry practice—she now pauses to check her work and corrects errors independently, which she hadn't done before.

During a session with Archie (Year 8), he not only tackled basic algebra confidently but also transferred those skills to new types of problems without hesitation, showing far more initiative than in earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, younger student Natalia created her first worded maths problem on her own, having previously needed step-by-step prompts for similar tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond Primary School.
