Over the years, I have developed the opinion that the teaching of transferable skills - contrary to only what is needed at the moment - is most valuable for the student’s future development. It is important to see that just completing the mandatory homework will not suffice, the real challenge is to change the mindset. As a good tutor, one has…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is understand the student’s point of view and teach in a fun, engaging way that makes it easier for them to learn. Tutors should have a genuine interest in helping their students learn. My strengths are that I have experience as a tutor, I’m friendly and patient, and because I was recently a high…

The most important thing according to me is to get my point across crystal clear, whether it takes days or even if it takes to apologize for a mistake previously made. I would always own my actions and make an effort. Every child is important and so it is very important to understand that each one of them works at a different pace and one has to…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are build trust, encourage genuine confidence, and teach students how to learn independently. It's not just about helping them get through one subject or assignment, it's about giving them the skills and self-belief they can carry with them into everything else they do. I think my main strengths…

Encourage them to pursue their dreams. Teach them to be lifelong learners. I believe you have completely understood the concept when you can simplify it entirely. So, the student should totally grasp the concepts at hand. A tutor can help the student realize their passions, and help them achieve it. Making the students interested in the subject by…

As a tutor, the most important thing I can do for my students is to inspire in them a passion for learning that they may not get from school or other institutions in their life. The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

Empathy is key. If a tutor can show how learning certain topics can help a student in the future, it keeps the student's interest held in the subject for longer. What really helps is to periodically give some positive feedback to the student about their progress - how he or she has improved in the past 3 months, or month, for example. Because of…

Provide a safe space for the student to make mistakes without judgement. They don’t always have this at school with their peers looking on. Provide high level materials that don’t just duplicate those from school or in generic books. I really think about the resources we use to make sure they are the right level, challenging and have stretch…

I think having a positive relationship with the student is really important, in order to ensure there is mutual trust and understanding between student and tutor. One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is not only make the subject fun and easier to understand but to make the student believe in himself/herself. Most of the students, do not feel very confident in their own understanding of the subject and hesitate to participate in class discussions. I believe by making the student…

The process of getting started was very simple and clear, the tutor is doing a great job.
Karen, Maroubra

Inside MaroubraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Claudia focused on division and 3D shapes, connecting these to fractions while completing her Excel homework.

For Year 7 Ava, lessons explored coordinate geometry by graphing with tables of values and investigating transformations of shapes on a number plane.

A Year 8 student worked through the introduction to trigonometry using SOHCAHTOA as well as solving simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination methods.

Recent Challenges

In Year 6, one student often avoided showing working in algebra and fractions, especially when unsure—"she would pause, then erase attempts rather than risk a mistake." This hesitation meant feedback opportunities were missed and progress slowed during lessons.

A Year 10 student tackling trigonometry tended to rely heavily on calculator shortcuts for even basic steps, which led to gaps in understanding key trig definitions.

In Year 8 algebra, another lost focus midway through multi-step problems; as noted, "he'd get distracted and forget earlier steps," leading to repeated errors that undermined his confidence in class.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Maroubra noticed Ava, a Year 7 student, recently started checking her own working for mistakes and now asks for tougher questions when she finishes early—this is a big shift from when she'd quietly move on without double-checking.

In Year 6, Claudia used to hesitate with division by large numbers but can now independently solve problems involving six-digit dividends and confidently explains each step aloud.

Meanwhile, Gia (Year 4) has begun completing her homework before sessions without reminders and last week attempted all the "challenge" questions for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Aidan's Catholic Primary School.
