Taking initiative to bring the student out of their comfort zone. In a lot of cases, students fear showing their lack of knowledge, especially in group settings. However, it is important for the tutor to recognize this and invite the student into the circle of discussion and let them contribute. It is crucial to create a safe space that is…

I consider a tutor responsibility towards students is to be committed and flexible. The tutor should be with their student even if both have been going through the exam period. The tutor should never cancel on a lesson with a student for their own studies. As well, it is a must to be patient towards the student and be flexible as a tutor to learn…

I think that as a tutor, we should be different from teachers at school. We should provide extra care to their needs and catering to what areas of a particular topic they are struggling with, in order for them to improve. Therefore, I think that conducting a personalized teaching plan for the students to observe and explore what methods they can…

Besides achieving acad3mic grades, i believe teaching the kids about respect and boundaries are just as important. I think the most important things I can do for a student revolve around mentorship. Being a tutor is not just about imparting information and tips to the student. It is recognising the student as a whole, looking after their mental wellbeing, and ensuring that what they're learning is being tailored to them, rather than a cookie-cut approach. A…

A tutor does not just teach a student a particular subject. I believe that the most important function of a tutor is to foster overall academic confidence in a student and to develop better study techniques/learning habits more generally. A good tutor can give a student motivation and techniques to achieve not only in the tutored subject, but in…

According to me, it is to be open and provide a comfortable environment to the students, where they can study and share their thoughts without hesitating. Apart from this, it is to make learning a fun process by teaching in a more fun way, this includes doing different activities to make children understand the concepts, etc. I do possess great…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to break a concept down to its simplest form. In my school days, I often found this to be the easiest way to learn. If your basic foundation of any concept is strong, it gets much easier to build on that and learn more complex information pertaining to it. Moreover, being…

I consider the time and space a tutor gives to the student the most important thing. It is all about what they, as the student, are comfortable with. Encouragement. Encouraging my students while building their confidence is the most important thing that I will do for my students. A successful tutuor does more than merely help a student to raise their grade. In my opinion, a tutor should make an impression on a student. Give confidence to the student to be able to do the work independently eventually, and guide them in the right direction for doing so. If a tutor can teach and guide the student into having confidence and a good skill set to be able to feel comfortable doing the work at school, and it gives students self-assurance, then the tutor has done their…

Inside MaylandsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sarah worked on simplifying algebraic expressions and solving equations for unknowns, using practice problems to strengthen confidence.

In Year 9, Daniel focused on converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages as well as finding the area of composite shapes by breaking them into parts.

For Year 10, Lily reviewed calculations involving box and whisker plots alongside key probability concepts, applying these skills to real data scenarios.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, one student became distracted during multi-step calculation tasks—by the final questions, focus drifted and errors increased, especially with addition and subtraction over ten.

"He skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," a tutor noted for a Year 8 lesson: incomplete working meant mistakes went unnoticed until review.

In senior years (Year 10), homework was sometimes left unfinished when confusion arose; these unattempted problems limited exposure to essential problem-solving strategies.

Handwriting issues also emerged—misreading their own workings caused setbacks during geometry revision, leading to unnecessary frustration and wasted time searching for lost logic mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A Maylands tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid checking his answers now takes time to double-check clues and fix mistakes independently, showing real initiative during problem-solving.

In a recent high school session, another student who previously hesitated with algebraic equations made a breakthrough—speaking aloud their reasoning and picking up factorising much more quickly than before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who often lost focus was able to study for twenty minutes without complaint and converted tricky fractions accurately, finally finishing all assigned problems in one sitting for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Maylands Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bold Park Community School - Maylands.
