Make sure the students can ask questions to ensure they understand everything you just explained. In addition, make sure to create a safe environment where they are able to learn to the best of their abilities and feel free to ask questions about difficult concepts or unclear understandings. One of the most important things when tutoring is to maxmise your effort to help a student in any way possible, without actually doing an assignment/answering the question for them. I believe my role as a tutor is to help grow self-efficacy and to empower my students, so they are confident in tackling any problem. I am well spoken and am able to…

I think a tutor's role goes beyond simply offering solutions to problems; instead, they should steer students towards finding answers and ensure a solid grasp of the required steps. Additionally, adaptability is crucial, as teaching methods should be flexible to accommodate diverse learning styles. A tutor ought to be non-judgmental, patient, and…

The important thing a tutor can do for a student is to assist students in overcoming their challenges with a patient and empathetic approach. Given students' difficulties at school, tutoring sessions should provide a supportive and stress-free environment. Moreover, each processes information at their own pace. Therefore, besides helping with…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach him the problem solving skills, and motivate him to apply his skills on any problem he faces. After gaining experience with several types of personalities, I am now a tutor that understands how the student thinks. I motivate the student to figure out the solutions himself in a fun…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to understand what the student needs and work through those blocks with positive reinforcement. Some students have a hard time understanding concepts while others have no faith in themselves and struggle to retain information. I believe that the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to figure…

To be attentive and to address the students personal needs for growth. The tutor should set an ideal example in terms of behaviour motivation and actions- one which a student should be able to look up to but also resonate with. This allows him to engage with the student at a personal level and provide better more relatable academic support, but…

I believe that truly successful tutors create a positive learning environment for their students where questions and mistakes are rewarded and examined in order to address all of the student's queries on the content. Not only is this environment a highly effective way to ensure a deep understanding of the course, it encourages curiosity and makes…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is dedicate as much time and effort needed for the student to fully understand the topic. Most important would definitely be effort towards a student. No student would want a tutor who does not have the best interest in them and would definitely not want a tutor who is giving 50% of their efforts. Another important thing a tutor can do for a student is show passion and that they care, and that they are someone the students can…

Be honest. It is very important for a tutor to be honest in their responses. Secondly, the language the teacher uses has great impact on the students. Inside Merrylands WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Marcus focused on multiplying and dividing fractions, as well as converting fractions to decimals using step-by-step examples.

Year 7 student Sarah practiced adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and revised chance concepts through real-world scenarios.

For Year 10, David worked on essay structure and building background knowledge about set texts by breaking down prompts and discussing planning techniques.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 English, a student hesitated to use formal language in essays and struggled with planning, resulting in "structure issues within the essay" as noted by a tutor.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student tackling comprehension questions often rushed through texts without patience, leading to misinterpretation and missed details.

In Year 5 mathematics, another student avoided writing out working for multiplication algorithms—preferring mental calculation—which led to repeated mistakes that were hard to trace.

When spelling was assessed in Year 7, uncertainty around new words meant progress stalled until the "look, cover, write, check" method was actively used.

Recent Achievements

One Merrylands West tutor noticed a Year 10 student, who previously rushed through maths problems, now methodically checking each step in long division—showing much more patience than before.

Another high school student had been hesitant to ask for help with essay structure, but this session worked bit by bit through each section, openly discussing where she felt stuck and using feedback to clarify her ideas.

A younger student mastered both the 9x and 11x tables after earlier struggles and started confidently breaking down worded multiplication problems into smaller steps without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greystanes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Cerdon College.
