Being approachable is definitely key for the student to feel comfortable to reveal their weaknesses and ask for help. This allows me as a tutor to address their weak points and build up their skills. I believe my strengths are in being able to relate to the student and make learning fun and…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to help the student recognise their own potential. Alongside teaching them, it is just as important to ensure they realise they are capable of figuring things out on their own too (of course with some support!). This enables them to try their best and set the highest goals they can which is what I would…

I think supporting and encouraging a child learning is the key to being a good tutor. Teachers need to adapt teaching practices to suit the child’s learning methods for optimum learning. I believe children learn better in a compassionate nature and and in patience. I am encouraging and supportive of children’s learning. Learning can’t be…

Primarily, a tutor needs to be someone the student can depend on for sound knowledge of the content. Being a reliable, rational source of information who is able guide their students to effectively learn the content in an engaging but effective way will more often than not end up benefiting the student and help them achieve their goals. Generally…

A tutor should listen to the student’s needs, adapt to their learning style and create a supportive environment where questions are encouraged. Be available and help them develop transferable skills. In my opinion, there's no point handing them an A+ essay to study and learn phrases, but rather help them understand why each type of connection and phrase is important and adds value, so that they can build their own skills which can be used under pressure in exams and across all of their…

My thesis paper was about how positive reinforcement positively affects the students academics and based on the results the most important thing a teacher can do for a student is to appreciate them and the effort that they put in their work. Giving encouragement to a student will mean so much to them and that can motivate them to do better in…

I believe, the best things a tutor can do for a student is to personalise lessons to fit the learning style of each student, help them identify their strengths and teach to their strengths. In addition, it is important for a tutor to listen and communicate often with parents – successful tutors create individualized learning plans with their…

I think the most important things tutors can do is having clear and strong communication with the student so the can understand the weaknesses and adapt those classes to suit those weaknesses in the content. Tutors need to be understanding, patient, but also firm in their encouragement for their students to do their best. This means being available for any questions they may have and to meet students halfway, as well as being organised and prepared with their lessons so that students may get the best assistance possible. I believe I am patient and…

Personalise the learning based on the student’s needs and requirements and implement connections to the student’s interests to make learning more beneficial and efficient. Inside MicklehamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Aiden focused on long division strategies and revising multiplication with the column method, practising both through targeted word problems.

Year 5 student Zara worked on fractions—comparing and adding fractions with like denominators—and was introduced to equivalent fractions using number lines.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Lily revised angles by measuring and drawing them with a protractor, as well as identifying different types of angles in real-life diagrams.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion and organization surfaced as consistent hurdles across both primary and secondary levels.

In Year 8 mathematics, one student missed a page on homework sheets, while another in Year 9 repeatedly failed to submit complete assignments; "he needs improvement in organising his worksheets," a tutor observed.

For a Year 7 learner, missing or misplaced homework sheets led to lost time during lessons, making it difficult to review mistakes.

These lapses meant time was spent searching for materials rather than consolidating concepts like long division or area of composite figures—leaving gaps that lingered into revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mickleham noticed Haroon, a high schooler who previously hesitated to speak up when confused, now regularly asks clarifying questions during lessons on order of operations—a big step from staying quiet and guessing.

Hisham, also in high school, has started tackling fraction problems with visible enthusiasm after struggling to see their purpose; last session he volunteered to explain his reasoning out loud.

Meanwhile, a younger student showed new independence by building a 3D object alone from a 2D net without any prompting—something she'd avoided attempting alone just weeks ago.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Craigieburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mickleham Primary School.
