It's most important to be patient and listen thoroughly to ensure that the student receives the style of tutoring that helps them to thrive. An engaging and positive attitude from the tutor is also key in ensuring the student feels inspired and motivated. I believe I have the ability to respond to individual students learning methods and adjust…

Giving confidence to the student is the most important thing. If the student is not confident in their ability to do the task, then they will believe that they can not and will not try. Understanding the frustrations that the student can have because they don't understand something, staying calm and patiently taking the student through the problem…

Resilience after drawbacks. A good tutor should not only provide one or two solutions limited to a single issue, but also help students establish confidence and motivation, and achieve their goals through dedicated efforts. Being able to explain contents in various ways and relate concepts to tangible life experiences; being able to put myself on…

A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. A tutor should be someone to whom a student can approach with any sorts of problem with the expectation that their tutor can find a solution to it. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

make sure the tutors are patient and goes on a pace that is comfortable for the student. the most important thing to consider as a tutor is that each student is different and has their own way of learning, and its our job to understand and match their skillset, not the other way around. I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I believe an essential aspect to include in tutoring is helping students to develop metacognitive and study skills. In mainstream education, the uniqueness of student learning processes is often neglected. When I tutor students, I highly value teaching the specific study skills that will be most effective for them, imparting not merely content…

Explaining the concepts clearly and easily along with appropriate examples are the must for a tutor. But, more importantly, a tutor should help students cultivate good habits like hard work, discipline, confidence, time management etc. By doing so, a student not only grows academically but also personally. And this can help them in the future. I…

I believe that understanding is the most important thing a tutor must do for a student. I am currently…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is always listen to them and know what best works for them. This may mean having to make changes and adaptations to your tutoring style which is fine as long as the student gets the…

Christine, Mont Albert North

Inside Mont Albert NorthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Daniel focused on geometry, specifically learning to identify similar triangles by comparing side ratios and angles, as well as distinguishing congruent triangles using side lengths and angle properties.

In Year 5, Anna practised reading comprehension with texts like "Healthy Muscles Matter," answering questions and summarising key ideas.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Oliver strengthened his grammar skills by exploring contractions and common nouns through sentence exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, missing recent classes meant one student faced a test without having covered all required concepts. As a tutor noted, "it's easy to feel overwhelmed with limited prep time," and gaps in content made targeted revision challenging before the assessment.

In Year 5 writing tasks, skipping instructions led to avoidable errors—he would "jump into the exercises prior to reading", which cost time correcting simple mistakes instead of practicing new skills.

For a Year 3 student, incomplete homework built up; when trying to catch up, he struggled to keep pace and became frustrated during review sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Mont Albert North tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student's approach to geometry: after previously needing step-by-step guidance, she now independently spots hidden shapes and applies ratios to similar triangles with just brief prompts.

In a recent Year 8 session, a student who used to second-guess himself on grammar tasks has begun finishing punctuation exercises without hesitation, double-checking his work only once before moving on.

Meanwhile, a primary student surprised his tutor by expanding dot points into sentences during the lesson planning stage—something he'd resisted doing on his own until this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Balwyn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Box Hill Senior Secondary College.
