The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to boost up their confidence, because it's essential for the student to perform well under exam condition as well as during tutoring or class. And many students tends to lose focus, or go mind blank during exams due to a lack of confidence. In addition, it is extremely important for a tutor…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, build confidence, and foster independent thinking. A tutor should help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills so they can tackle future challenges independently. Rather than just providing answers, I focus on guiding students to…

A tutor can make the student love to learn new things. A tutor can make life easier for a student by showing him/her that acquiring knowledge is very beneficial and important for prospering in life later on. I can explain my ideas in a really easy way. I am very patient as I can repeat the lesson several times until the student understands. I have…

I believe all educators need to be able to connect with students. My experience is that being able to build bonds of trust and goodwill goes a long way in opening students up to what you're teaching, as well as facilitating a comfortable environment where students not only learn, but enjoy doing so. I believe my past experience in education is my…

I believe that tutors and teachers alike are not endless sources of book knowledge but rather a librarian who must guide students to discover, interpret and apply knowledge for themselves. Thus, it is crucial that a tutor forms a strong relationship with its students to create an environment where student learning is maximised. Further, in…

A tutor is solely responsible for shaping a students life. I consider the tutor to be committed in understanding what type of student he/she handles, since all of them aren't the same. Analyzing the talents of students and guiding them in a friendly way, will definitely motivate them to perform better. The teacher must be strong with the subject,…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. If the child is stuck on a concept, it is my responsibility to help the…

I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. My personal opinion on me is I can understand the problem being faced by the students despite their denial about the problem and eventually bring them…

The most important things a tutor can do is provide a support network and assistance for the students both in and outside of academics. Genuinely understanding the students need and tailoring the best approach of teaching accordingly is the best thing a tutor can do. To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

I believe the single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide patient and constant support for them outside of their classroom, and try to clear all their doubts effectively. Moreover, a tutor should guide their students in a manner in which they can focus on key areas of improvement and then work on realistic goals, which…

No matter which subject the student is learning, s/he needs to know why s/he needs to learn it. Recently, Diane Tavenner, the innovator of American education encourages students to learn whatever they want by asking them to solve problem by themselves. Build a personal relationship with them and understand what the student does and doesn't like. I've always been hesitant to answer questions in class because I feared being wrong. At home when my parents asked me that same question, I answered without the fear of being wrong. I strongly believe that it's important for the tutor to motivate the student to be confident and answer irrespective of the answer being right or wrong. Students are…

Inside MortlakeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Lily worked on adding and subtracting fractions, then practiced multiplying and dividing both mixed and improper fractions using visual aids.

In Year 8, Ethan focused on expanding brackets in algebraic expressions and began factorising basic expressions for homework support.

For Year 11, Olivia reviewed the strategic role of financial management along with objectives of finance and explored the interdependence between finance and other business functions within her Commerce studies.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 maths student often rushed to answers without showing step-by-step working, especially in algebra and inequalities—this made it hard to spot sign errors or missing pronumerals. "He tends to work out the answers in his head instead of writing out his working," a tutor noted, which led to small mistakes accumulating on assessments.

In senior economics, a Year 12 struggled with structuring business report evaluations and sometimes neglected reviewing class notes for macroeconomic concepts.

One Year 9 English student read quickly but overlooked grammatical errors and failed to organise ideas clearly in written responses, impacting both comprehension and expression.

Recent Achievements

One Mortlake tutor noticed real shifts across different year levels recently. In Year 8 maths, Tyler used to skip showing his working out, but now consistently sets it out for problems he can't do mentally, which has helped him catch errors before moving on.

In senior Business Studies, Kai moved from mostly descriptive writing to crafting more analytical paragraphs in his reports after targeted feedback—he now explains cause and effect instead of just listing facts.

Meanwhile, Zarraf (Year 6 English) went from hesitating to share ideas aloud to making thoughtful predictions about challenging texts and backing them up with details from the story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Gladesville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
