I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not just teach them their lessons - but also teach them better study habits. This will ensure that the students may learn to study on their own without the help of a tutor all the time, and that they may be able to grow as an individual prepared for bigger challenges (such as uni,…

Finding ways to help them in understanding key concepts e.g. using simpler language to explain in my best possible way. Proofing reading my student's work is also important especially math questions as one mistake could lead to a subsequent one, i would teach student ways to proof read their work during exams. Being kind, nice and patient are the…

The tutor must be patient and approachable. He/she should make sure that the student should be able to understand the lesson and perform well in class. I am patient and kind. I prepare my own materials for the lessons. I also make mock up quizzes and exams. I am creative in making them understand the lesson like relating the subject to the normal…

In the context of Science and Mathematics, the key aspect is HOW to think. Science requires imagination, innovation as well as an excellent recall and grasp of modern scientific understanding. Mathematics, being a tool - requires the students to be well-equipped with the basic mathematical tools. To directly answer this question; a tutor must…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are listening to them and paying attention to their needs. Students can be shy and may not make it abundantly clear what they need in any given moment, but there are usually signs, though they may be subtle. It is a tutor's job to monitor the student throughout a lesson and make sure…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is definitely taking initiative in everything they do. An outstanding tutor should be able take charge and seize the initiative; being a role model, for example, if a student has an exam coming up, a tutor should take the initiative to provide extra sessions; being able to put their best foot…

The most important thing a tutor can do is recognise their students ability level and mould their teaching to that level. This insures that the kids do not feel out of depth, but also they are learning new things every session. Building confidence is the most important thing a tutor can possibly do for a student. It's very important for a tutor to listen a student's worry points and problems and guide him accordingly to overcome them without breaking his confidence. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make themselves welcoming. A good and effective tutor is open to all ideas and willing to completely work with the student. I believe empowerment is one single most important aspects a tutor can bring to a student's live. I think for a tutor it's being able to be contacted even after lesson hours. As for maths, it's very difficult to find solutions online and last minute stress before an exam is not good, so I think being available to be contacted and being flexible is the most important thing for a tutor. I like to make the classes interactive and fun to keep…

It's important to always listen to the student and understand their perspective on what they are studying. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is be a source of motivation and encouragement, to help boost the student's confidence. Oftentimes the issue with students who seek tutoring is their inability to recognise their potential rather than their lack of knowledge, and tutors can assist them in accessing this potential. -Patience -…

Inside MosmanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zara worked through volume and unit conversions, practising with real-world measurement examples.

In Year 9, Sam tackled expanding polynomials and reducing fractions step-by-step using practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia focused on analysing the function domain and range as well as applying function notation to problem-solving exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 English, one student avoided answering addition questions that involved carrying numbers and chose only easier homework problems, as a tutor noted: "She completed long addition questions that did not need carrying."

In Year 7 Maths, another student repeatedly guessed answers and waited for feedback instead of showing his own working, leading to less independent problem-solving.

A Year 10 student left assigned pre-reading for an English play unfinished, which meant class time was spent explaining context rather than tackling questions.

When homework or in-class note-taking is skipped or incomplete, valuable practice and test preparation opportunities are lost.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mosman noted that one high school student, Lachy, has become much more proactive about his learning—he now arrives well prepared for English sessions and is able to answer most questions independently, a shift from previous lessons where he relied more on guidance.

Another older student, Ollie, recently completed over 90% of a mock maths test quickly and correctly after showing much sharper recall of both new and old concepts; previously, he struggled with formula recollection under pressure.

Meanwhile, in a younger session, Theo stopped guessing at spelling tasks and instead began checking for the "ty" ending in number words—a change from earlier lessons when he'd give up or guess randomly.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

My son and myself are greatly satisfied with the work that Jacqualine is putting forth to my son Tyler, he looks forward to every session. Jacqueline is professional, explains the following subjects until my son grasps on but also makes learning enjoyable. Not only myself by Tyler's teacher has seen an improvement with his confidence when completing a math's task at school. I believe we are in the process of having Tyler's teacher also liaise with Jacqueline to make this process a easier transition.

Yes tutoring is going really well. I'm practicing and doing my best. I haven't done this in years but I feel as though I am picking it up quite well. Many thanks.

I would just like to say how thrilled we are with Aaron, he is amazing. Tyler loves working with him and actual looks forward to doing maths which I never thought would happen. So once again thank you for such a wonderful service with great tutors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mosman Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mosman High School.
