As a tutor, I firmly believe in the profound impact that effective education can have on a student's life. Drawing from my experience in teaching as a CSR activity, I recognize several essential aspects that I consider crucial in nurturing a student's growth and learning journey. 1. Encouraging them and reminding them that their school marks are not what entirely defines them as a good student. On top of providing them with academic support and guidance that they can apply to other fields. For instance, how to structure an exemplar essay or simply how to construct a study timetable. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to inspire and empower them to become independent learners. This involves not only teaching them course concepts, but also cultivating critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and a growth mindset. A tutor should foster curiosity, encourage questions and provide guidance and…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to support them without judgement. Whether that support comes in smaller forms of teaching students concepts they may struggle with or encouraging students to not give up. As a tutor I think my greatest strengths are bringing in a passion and enjoyment for the subjects I tutor and…

A tutor needs to be able to correctly relay information to the student and teach in an understandable way. It is crucial that you teach your student in the way they learn and do whatever needs to be done to help them. As well as this, you need to be able to set goals to work towards with your student so that the time spent with them is worthwhile.…

For me, the most important thing to do as a tutor is not only help teach class content, but share study skills, time management, note taking tips, and other ways to manage the Year 12 workload. Year 12 is not purely about knowledge, but handling pressure and staying on top of work, and I hope to communicate my experience in this. Throughout my…

A tutor should have good listening skills so that they will better understand students' misconceptions and struggles. It is important to treat each student and how you go about emphasising the content to the students uniquely. A good tutor should aim to be relatable and open to share own experiences with learning and highlight that it isn't an…

Allow the student to overcome challenges on their own. Helping children realise their full potential. It's important to turn negatives into positives for example, praising a child and making sure they know they have improved. Motivation and confidence are two key elements of student success, if I can support them in achieving a sense of self-efficacy regarding these elements, they are bound to see improvement. Students often know where they fall short in their work, they just need motivation to improve those areas. Once they know that they can achieve this themselves,…

Mara, Mosman

Inside MosmanTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Zara worked through volume and unit conversions, practising with real-world measurement examples.

In Year 9, Sam tackled expanding polynomials and reducing fractions step-by-step using practice questions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia focused on analysing the function domain and range as well as applying function notation to problem-solving exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 5 English, one student avoided answering addition questions that involved carrying numbers and chose only easier homework problems, as a tutor noted: "She completed long addition questions that did not need carrying."

In Year 7 Maths, another student repeatedly guessed answers and waited for feedback instead of showing his own working, leading to less independent problem-solving.

A Year 10 student left assigned pre-reading for an English play unfinished, which meant class time was spent explaining context rather than tackling questions.

When homework or in-class note-taking is skipped or incomplete, valuable practice and test preparation opportunities are lost.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mosman noted that one high school student, Lachy, has become much more proactive about his learning—he now arrives well prepared for English sessions and is able to answer most questions independently, a shift from previous lessons where he relied more on guidance.

Another older student, Ollie, recently completed over 90% of a mock maths test quickly and correctly after showing much sharper recall of both new and old concepts; previously, he struggled with formula recollection under pressure.

Meanwhile, in a younger session, Theo stopped guessing at spelling tasks and instead began checking for the "ty" ending in number words—a change from earlier lessons when he'd give up or guess randomly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mosman Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mosman High School.
