Provide academic guidance, human connection, and consistency, and the combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. Ability to explain difficult things in a simple way and to connect with children (or with older students), on a personal level. Understanding the world of…

Creating an open environment by being caring and respectful is very important. Being resourceful and knowledgeable about the topics and having multiple ways of being able to teach them is also important. My…

The most important thing in my opinion is helping the student understand the problem, simply completing the problem for them helps no-one. If a tutor can do this, then the student should be able to complete any problem. Secondly, I think that it is important to treat the student as if they are an equal. Students who require tutoring generally…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to clarify concepts, boost confidence, personalize learning, offer support, foster critical thinking, set and track goals, empower independence, promote a love of learning, provide constructive feedback, and create a positive learning environment. A tutor plays a multifaceted role in a…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is show them that it is possible to learn things which at first seem complicated, or foreign. My greatest strengths are my ability to explain mathematical concepts using non-technical language, and my ability to empathize with others. Explaining mathematical concepts with non-technical…

Ensuring Ng that the content is understood. I will always ask students to explain concepts back to me and work through further examples after teaching or explaining a concept. I am patient and methodical. I like to break down concepts into simple steps and love using analogy. I’m also flexible and able to adapt lessons on the fly to address gaps…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for students is to give them the confidence to believe in their abilities in order for them to view themselves as capable enough to learn new things, work hard and perform their best. This starts with the tutor identifying the student's area of need and working hard alongside them to improve it.…

First and most important is creating a relaxed and comfortable learning environment for the student and that includes being approachable and easy to talk to, that way the student can ask questions freely where he don’t understand. Second, be flexible and adaptable in imparting the knowledge to the student in the best way possible 1. I am very…

Inside Mount DuneedTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Krisztian focused on multiplying and dividing fractions as well as converting between simple and complex fractions using times tables.

Year 8 student Sam worked through ratios and rates, including comparing ratios and understanding gradient, along with applying index laws to simplify expressions.

For Year 10, Emily practiced solving linear equations and explored finding x-intercepts for quadratics by factoring and using the quadratic formula.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4, one student often avoided writing out working in fraction and multiplication problems, instead guessing answers when unsure—"he gets frustrated for not knowing it so blurts out a guess," as noted. This led to confusion mid-question and made it difficult to spot where thinking went off track.

In Year 10 algebra, untidy layout meant numbers like '9' resembled a 'y', causing mix-ups during graphing tasks and making it hard to follow steps ("organisation and handwriting...hard to tell the difference"). In both cases, unclear written work slowed progress and left errors hidden until the very end.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mount Duneed noticed one Year 8 student has started correcting their own working steps, a real shift from earlier sessions where they'd just wait for the answer.

In Year 10, another student who struggled with trig equations last term is now able to use both sine and cosine rules accurately during problem sets—they completed a set unprompted.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised themselves by finishing all problems independently after previously needing lots of encouragement just to start.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Rowena is lovely and Sam feels comfortable with her which is great as he is quite shy.

All is going really well with tutor Sam , he is excellent and very good with my son Dominic.

We believe if it wasn't for Stuart; Paige would not have achieved her most recent result.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Grovedale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Mount Duneed Regional Primary School.
