To teach them how to be an independent learner and cope with dealing with new problems and how to approach them, with a problem solving mindset and confidence. Being able to quickly identify the students method of learning and approaching problems and adapt to that in order to maximize the productivity of the time I am with them and to minimize…

I believe the most important role of a tutor is to build confidence in their student's learning, guild them to think critically and solve problems independently. A competent tutor will create a supportive environment, encourage their students to ask questions, and allow them to develop the skills required for success in their future studies. My…

Build confidence and foster independence. A tutor should help students develop problem-solving strategies they can apply on their own, not just memorise solutions. Creating a supportive, judgment-free environment is crucial - students need to feel comfortable making mistakes because that's where real learning happens. It's also important to…

I think the most important thing a student can do for a tutor is give them confidence in subjects that they are struggling with, or reinforce their confidence in the subjects they are strong at. Going into a test with confidence certainly helps me perform better, so it would be important for me to help potential students with this, by clarifying…

A teacher must be absolutely predictable in terms of her expectations of her pupils. She must stick to her classroom expectations and be very consistent. If a class senses that the teacher is unsure, they will be in charge of that classroom very shortly. Therefore, consistency is a must. Fairness is also important. Being willing to listen and…

A tutor is there as a guide, not to replace the teacher. A tutor should help a student not just with the topic at hand, but also allow for the student to grow and be able to solve problems and learn effectively on their own in the future. I have been told that the way I explain things are easy to understand. My students enjoy my company as I…

Most importantly I think a tutor should be dedicated in his or her approach to improving a students learning abilities. Also, the teaching should be engaging, challenging and enjoyable so that the student gains the confidence to move towards self learning. I consider myself to be a patient person and a good listener. When teaching I try to…

Never to discourage a student but instead find the positive side of the student’s academic background and thereby gradually augmenting the strengths of the same student (to have a sanguine attitude). Although the same student already possesses all the necessary skills to achieve their best, sometimes it takes motivation and encouragement from…

Students often tend to be awkward and shy, so a tutor need to be laid back and can keep their cool even when students are non-responsive or sometimes, rude. A tutor needs to take the student's academic struggles into account, and praise the efforts they put in and also keep track of the student's progress. The most important thing a tutor can do…

Inside Mount NasuraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Isabelle worked on trigonometry basics and applied the quadratic formula, as well as reviewing her mock exam to target areas for improvement.

For Year 10, Nathan focused on exponents and financial mathematics, including exponential growth and decay, then consolidated skills in mean, mode, median, and introductory trigonometry using real-life examples.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack tackled linear algebra—solving for x and transposing equations—and practised finding midpoints and gradients of lines through step-by-step problem sets.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, a student needed more work on time, and on long term memory after receiving a test score, with missed opportunities to apply feedback in subsequent revision.

For a Year 9 learner tackling algebra, skipped steps in working—"she did x+410 instead of 5x+410"—hid calculation errors that were hard to trace later.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student forgot both homework and their notebook for sessions, slowing progress as notes and corrections couldn't be reviewed together.

In senior years, scattered study materials left another teen unprepared for the start of lessons; time was lost simply getting organized before any learning began.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mount Nasura noticed a big shift with one high school student, Owen, who used to get stuck on algebra and make technical errors—he's now tackling questions more independently and even taught himself how to find the distance between two points.

Another secondary student, Isabelle, has become noticeably more proactive: she arrives prepared with her own questions each session and now completes practice problems efficiently without needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, Tawny (primary) moved from confusion about area formulas to correctly switching between square and rectangle calculations; she recently calculated the area of a triangle using the right units.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Armadale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Kingsley Primary School.
