I believe that tutors should help students reach their own personal learning goals. Each student should leave their sessions feeling happy and that they have accomplished/learnt something they didn’t know before. It is important that every student feels they understand the content and their educational needs are met with enthusiasm and interest.…

I definitely think that establishing a friendly and comfortable environment is an essential aspect that allows students to thrive. Ensuring that content for the students is challenging yet achievable and rewarding is also important for them to advance in their education. As a tutor, I firstly think that my greatest strength is inclusion. I am able…

A tutor must not tell a student how to do something, but show and allow them to learn it. Consequently, the student will be able to apply what they have learned through their own capabilities. Additionally, a tutor should be able to infuse some interest in the subject even if the student finds no particular interest in the subject. This may seem…

To me, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to have consistency. If a student goes into a session and has a basic idea of what it looks like, it helps them stay on track and focused the entire session. I am a patient person. I do not get frustrated easily if a student is having trouble with their work or is not understanding…

Teach and help them learn by listening to what it is that they need help with. Each student is different so developing an individual way with each one is very important as a tutor. We are very happy with our tutor Pradeep. He was brilliant! He helped my daughter with math's test preparation. He explained everything fast and clear. It was a lot of things to cover, but he did it so well. Moreover, my daughter got 90% in her recent maths test thanks to Pradeep.

Inside Mount PleasantTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jamie worked on advanced reading comprehension under timed conditions and built vocabulary through cloze passages.

In Year 10, Sebastien focused on comparative essay writing—structuring paragraphs to analyse The Tempest and Hag-Seed together—and practiced thesis statements for All the Light We Cannot See using sample HSC questions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Alex refined long response writing skills by planning and composing introductions collaboratively, with targeted feedback on integrating sophisticated language into academic essays.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 English, one student repeatedly reused familiar phrases and techniques in essay writing, which narrowed vocabulary growth and made arguments feel formulaic. As noted, "language should be expanded," yet attempts to introduce new words often led to uncertainty and hesitation mid-task.

In Year 11 comparative essays, another student struggled with paragraph structure—layout was sometimes confusing, making it hard to follow the logic of their argument or meet criteria for comparison.

During a recent Year 7 maths session, inconsistent back-checking on worded problems meant small errors crept into otherwise strong answers; time was spent fixing slips rather than building confidence.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Mount Pleasant recently noticed some real growth with students across a few year levels. One high school student, Sebastien, used to stick to the same basic vocabulary but now deliberately swaps in more sophisticated words and has begun drafting assignments earlier without prompting—he even shared his Google doc for feedback before the deadline.

Another senior student had struggled with trigonometry, but after working through problems together started asking clarifying questions independently and successfully tackled new trig questions on his own.

In primary maths, one Year 3 girl who found telling time difficult worked out her own method after practice and now explains her thinking out loud as she solves problems.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corrimal District Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Pleasant Heights Public School.
