In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. It's about being a guiding light through challenges, a source of motivation, and a trusted resource for…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer help which is tailored to the student's specific needs. This is not usually done in classes as teachers have a large number of students and cannot always pitch their lessons at the right level for everybody. A tutor,on the other hand, who works with a small group of students, can…

I believe that teachers/tutors make the greatest impact on a developing child or young adult's mind. Apart from the child's family, a teacher/tutor has the most influential face to face contact with a student, where it be as a mentor or as a friend. Hence, I strongly feel that tutors have the opportunity and responsibility to educate and develop a…

Provide the student with confidence. Not only with their work but confidence in the fact that their tutor is able to accurately educate them and use that information at school or university My biggest strength as a tutor is certainly my ability to adapt my lessons accordingly. Firstly, a tutor needs to spot what students are in need and look for the best solution for them. For example, students may not be interested in some topics and perform badly, tutor should notice it is not about the ability of the students but the motivation. To solve this problem, tutor should think of planning the lesson in a fun…

I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. A tutor's responsibility, in my opinion, should be to identify why the student may be struggling in that specific area of academics and then to adjust their teaching approach and technique to cater for…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

I think the most important job of a tutor is to help the student, not just in answering questions, but by giving them a fundamental understanding of the content that they would be able to reapply to many other questions, particularly ones that are curveballs. Apart from that, giving them the belief that they can do well if they just apply…

The most important things for a tutor is to provide them your trust and support. If you cannot do this, the student won't find you as a reliable and encouraging tutor and therefore, won't get the best out of their learning whilst damaging yourself as a tutor. Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. Inside MurrumbeenaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lily focused on simplifying fractions and practising multiplication facts up to 10, using visual aids for support.

Year 7 student Ava tackled linear equations and explored plotting points on the Cartesian plane, including drawing straight-line graphs by hand.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ethan worked through trigonometry concepts such as bearings and distances, as well as calculating surface area and volume of composite shapes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student left their homework incomplete and was "easily distracted," often rushing through fractions and worded problems without full confidence, as one tutor observed.

In a Year 8 algebra session, skipping steps when solving equations led to small errors—practicing showing all working became necessary for test preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student relied on back-checking answers but occasionally misapplied formulas before correcting themselves.

The struggle to commit times tables to memory persisted in Year 5; repeated revision was needed as material was quickly forgotten, leading to frequent revisiting of the same multiplication concepts week after week.

Recent Achievements

One Murrumbeena tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle statistics problems alone—she completed her entire homework set without needing prompts.

In Year 12, another student who used to second-guess herself with complex loan calculations is now confidently comparing interest rates and can choose the most cost-effective loan on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student who struggled to show his maths working has started organising each step clearly in his book instead of skipping ahead, finishing all ten practice questions accurately for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Murrumbeena Primary School.
