I think these are essential personality traits to become a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to enjoy learning. In the bottom line, every student must learn the subject to be able to achieve their goal; it can be to simply pass the subject or score above 90%. Because of them having to do the subject anyways, it is important to show them that learning is not…

The most important thing a tutor can do for his student is to be his friend first and then a tutor. If I can be a good friend of my student I can be a great tutor as well because teaching is all about what level of comfort you share with your students and if I am their friend the level of comfort would be high which will make the process of…

I believe that it is extremely important for tutors to follow the students closely in their understanding, instead of a general form of teaching as this helps to lay a good groundwork for students to be able to practice their learnings and understand the content in a deeper level. An important way this can done is by being continuously available…

I think a tutors support and belief in a student is really important. The knowledge that the tutor thinks they can do well is often just as important as the actual tutoring because if they think it's possible, they won't give up I am able to come up with multiple ways to explain different topics meaning that there are different opportunities for a…

I believe it is being a mentor and the light at the end of the tunnel. It is a stressful time and there are a lot of adults constantly reiterating how important it is to get good grades. I believe tutors can be that alternate perspective that students may need to get that motivation to succeed. Apart from this, it is about giving the student the…

A tutor should be able to pinpoint the weakness of the student and empower that specific topic. A tutor should also make sure that students understand the underlying logic behind questions so that they are not blindly accepting answers. Patience and creativity. I never get frustrated with students even if they need the 100th time of explanation.…

Inside MurrumbeenaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lily focused on simplifying fractions and practising multiplication facts up to 10, using visual aids for support.

Year 7 student Ava tackled linear equations and explored plotting points on the Cartesian plane, including drawing straight-line graphs by hand.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ethan worked through trigonometry concepts such as bearings and distances, as well as calculating surface area and volume of composite shapes.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student left their homework incomplete and was "easily distracted," often rushing through fractions and worded problems without full confidence, as one tutor observed.

In a Year 8 algebra session, skipping steps when solving equations led to small errors—practicing showing all working became necessary for test preparation.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student relied on back-checking answers but occasionally misapplied formulas before correcting themselves.

The struggle to commit times tables to memory persisted in Year 5; repeated revision was needed as material was quickly forgotten, leading to frequent revisiting of the same multiplication concepts week after week.

Recent Achievements

One Murrumbeena tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to tackle statistics problems alone—she completed her entire homework set without needing prompts.

In Year 12, another student who used to second-guess herself with complex loan calculations is now confidently comparing interest rates and can choose the most cost-effective loan on her own.

Meanwhile, a younger student who struggled to show his maths working has started organising each step clearly in his book instead of skipping ahead, finishing all ten practice questions accurately for the first time.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Regardless of his university workload he is still able to find the time to teach me topics which I, personally, was unable to comprehend. Although he may be young, his abilities have allowed me to develop a greater understanding of mathematics along with helping me uncover my pure passion for the world that is maths.

Tutoring with Amir is going much better. He is very knowledgeable on the subject and I feel Jaime will definitely improve and benefit from ongoing tutoring

Deepti has been tutoring my son in Year 7. Deepti has developed an amazing rapport with my son and has inspired him emensely. His maths results for algebra have improved out of sight since having Deepti tutor him. Deepti is able to engage him and explain the rules and concepts and reinforce them through practice. Having been a teacher myself, I am very impressed with Deepti's skills and this has been reflected in my son's results. In addition his keenness in maths since having Deepti as his tutor is very impressive.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Murrumbeena Primary School.
