Having been tutored by several people over my high school career, I consider the most important thing a tutor can do for students are enabling them to reach their full potential. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly understand them. By this I mean understand who they are as a person and as a student. This allows you to achieve clarity on weaknesses, goals, ambitions and drive to understand allowing you to adjust your teaching style and content to align with their preferences. I think my biggest…

Ensure the students understand the main concepts. Also provide different learning method for different students is also very important, as each student may learn more efficiently in different ways. I have a positive personality and I prefer to leave my explanation simple. It would therefore benefit students as it will be easier for them to…

The most important thing a tutor can do is not only help them through school, but be encouraging and not make students feel less than. This enables them to feel supported through their academic journey from a person who recently gone through their struggles, not just by teachers and parents. I am very patient and empathetic which I believe are…

The most important things that a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are motivating the students to learn on their own as well as arming them with the tools and study skills. The motivation to learn is critical, since the tutor can teach the material, but at the end of the day, it is the student who has to master it. Without such…

A tutor should be able to explain concepts in a manner which allows students to understand the concepts and apply it elsewhere. A tutor should assist students in understanding concepts on a deeper level, rather than just rote learning. Furthermore, a tutor should be passionate in what they teach. A teacher that is passionate about subjects will…

A good tutor can raise interest of the student. Once the student feel interested in the subject, then he/she will be keen on learning new things. In addition, tutoring is more than teaching, and students are more engaged and proactive. I have strong interest in maths and I have my degree in commerce, this would be helpful for students who wanna…

As a tutor you need to provide the individual with problem solving skills to allow them to recognise when a situation is difficult and ways in which they can go about the problem or situation in an effective way to gain insight. This relates to when the child may have a difficult problem for which they can break things down into smaller more…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them to learn for themselves. It is easy to rote memorize a formula or a text, but to be able to teach someone how they can teach themselves and to show them how to problem solve so that they can attack problems independently is far more valuable I believe my strengths as a…

A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. Have a lot of patience and not get frustrated. Find a way of explaining or doing something that the child understands. Not giving up. Personally, being adaptable and flexible in your teaching is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. As individuals, we all learn at a different pace through a variety of mediums. Hence, it is important to easily recognise this and cater your teaching for each student. This creates a personalised and catered experience which is…

A tutor possesses many pivotal roles in a student's journey to tertiary levels. I believe the single most crucial contribution a tutor can make is to fan the flame. If a student gives up on their own ability despite genuine interest, then their potential will be lost. A tutor has the unique capability, and responsibility, to recognise and…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to engage in thorough discussions about their thought processes, providing real-time feedback. Inside NaremburnTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Nick focused on identifying outliers and calculating standard deviation in data sets, as well as analysing box-plot graphs.

In Year 10, Emily worked through quadratic equations—solving by factorising and graphing parabolas—and also practised simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Olivia tackled logarithms, including laws of logarithms and their application to polynomials, along with some targeted test revision ahead of her upcoming assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's graphing work was noted as "messy," making it harder to spot calculation errors or follow their reasoning under test conditions.

For a senior student tackling statistics, over-reliance on written notes during trigonometry practice limited confidence when formulas were not provided—"relies on notes to complete the questions."

Meanwhile, in Year 11 English, a reluctance to write linking sentences led to repeated arguments rather than clear analysis; as observed: "he merely rewrote the question into a vague answer without incorporating explanations."

In each case, clarity and independent working impacted performance in both maths and English tasks.

Recent Achievements

In high school maths, George has moved from needing help with quadratics to independently tackling the most difficult test-style questions, even handling extension problems that previously caused confusion.

Another student, Lilian, used to rely on step-by-step support for equations but now works through multi-step algebraic questions without guidance and is starting to manipulate both sides of equations confidently.

Meanwhile, Nick in Year 7 English shifted from basic paragraph writing to crafting two full PEEL paragraphs using evidence and thoughtful analysis after initially struggling to structure his ideas.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Naremburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SHORE - Sydney Church of England Preparatory School, Northbridge.
