Tutors should be willing to listen and work well with students to achieve their personal goals. Tutors must foster or inspire a strong work ethic within students, motivating them to strive to reach their personal best. Aside from increasing a student's comprehension of particular subjects, tutors should highlight the importance of speaking up and…

I believe the most important things tutors can do for students is to guide by teaching how rather than what. Additionally the most important thing a tutor can do is create a positive relationship with their students and a safe and welcoming environment that allows for mistakes. As every student does not learn the same way It's imperative that…

I believe the most important aspect of tutoring is targeting a student's goal in a subject, whether that be just passing or scoring 100%, and teaching them at that level, whilst providing that extra push to potentially help them succeed above these goals. In doing so, I believe this allows students to engage more with the work and see strong…

I think taking a holistic/personalised approach is very important, rather than focusing on content alone (although this should be the main focus, of course). This includes being attentive of their strengths and difficulties during study, and tailoring lessons accordingly. I think I am patient, willing to explain/ellaborate concepts in many…

Listen. I think it is pivotal for a tutor to be able to listen to the student. Be it regarding concepts or content, or just a tutors teaching style. Listening and responding to feedback is essential. Determination. When teaching a student something for the first time, it can be very difficult for them to understand a concept. So, as a tutor, I am…

I think the biggest benefit a tutor can have is to help instill in a student a sense of confidence in their ability to learn. Regardless of how much subject matter a student is able to retain, they will have a lot of learning to do beyond when they are being tutored, so I believe it is at least as important for students to be ‘learning how to…

It's the responsibility of a tutor to meet students where they are at. Tutors should come to learn the boundaries of what their students do and do not understand and create structure and context for pushing those boundaries to ultimately envelop the knowledge they need to succeed. This can sometimes mean "back-filling" missing knowledge or…

One of the most important skills I believe a tutor can develop is the art of explaining material in different ways. Often, when students struggle to understand some concept, explaining the material in the same way repeatedly does not help. The key then is to try approaching the material in different ways until the student can grasp it. Past tutees…

Prior to anything a tutor must undertand the student's goals and objectives. It is only after this that the tutor should then understand what kind of person the student is, motivational factors behind the interest in learning, and how to communicate more effectively when transfering knowledge. The student's personality is also a key factor to…

Inside NewportTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Chloe worked on number patterns, including recognising and continuing arithmetic and geometric sequences, as well as exploring triangular numbers by visualising them with diagrams.

Year 8 Liam practised applying the Pythagorean theorem to find unknown side lengths in right-angled triangles and began rearranging equations in algebra.

For Year 10 Ethan, sessions focused on financial mathematics, calculating interest and rates using real-life scenarios, alongside evaluating algebraic expressions for homework assignments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, "she needs to be more careful in writing the correct units for consumer arithmetic problems," as one tutor observed—small details slipped by when rushing through worded tasks.

A Year 10 student hesitated to attempt rearranging equations alone, repeatedly saying "I can't do that" before realising the process was within reach with a nudge.

In senior trigonometry, working without clear diagrams led to confusion about which formula applied; skipping this visual step cost time and confidence.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner found division questions harder to tackle independently when instructions weren't read fully at first glance.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Newport noticed a Year 8 student who used to guess when stuck now stops and explains her reasoning before attempting each algebra question, showing real initiative.

In Year 11, Chloe was initially hesitant with rearranging equations but, after some joint practice, began solving for unknowns on her own and even made concise edits to her written responses without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student who previously avoided division is now not only eager to tackle new problems but also demonstrates links between multiplication and division by setting out solutions step-by-step during sessions.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We couldn't be happier. Both girls are enjoying the tutoring with Jackie, and feel they are learning something new each week.

Kymberley has clicked quite well with Gayan and she seems to be very happy with him.

Annalise has settled and is working well with Sam.  He's a great tutor, very attentive and makes her think!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mona Vale Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newport Public School.
