A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. A tutor can engage more in helping the student understand specific concepts and make the environment of teaching interesting. The teaching environment can be made interesting by giving the students a reason to learn the concepts and showing real-world…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. It’s not just about helping them understand the content, it’s also about building their self-belief and showing them that they "can" succeed. A good tutor should also adapt their…

I think that a tutor should not limit themselves to just subject knowledge. They should research more on effective teaching methods and strategies that might help them connect to their students more. They should develop practices that make a student's life easier and should understand the individual needs of the students. Often tutors have to…

I feel the strengths as a tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team player. I…

Like I said, patience and comfortable environment created between the tutor and the student. Rest all can be taken care of by referring to the respective books and study materials. Interactive studies make students remember and understand topics really well. If a tutor can help the student to enjoy the subjects, then it becomes an activity which…

I believe support and encouragement are the most important elements that me as a tutor can help my students. Some students do not like to be pushed, and they need time for themselves as well, so supporting and encouraging them will direct them towards success. Some other students may experience difficulties in study (do not get a good result), so…

A tutor can make an immense difference in the learning attitude of a student, the benefits of which are numerous as having the right mentality can prompt students to become more disciplined, focused and interested and can in turn improve their academic outcomes long term. I consider tutoring to be important in two ways: academics and self-growth. Being a tutor to me means bringing out the best in someone academically as well as providing them with the tools they need to become independent, life-long learners. I think a great tutor is someone who can help their student grow to love and appreciate the subject of…

I believe that as a tutor, personalise students' study plan is very important, because every student has unique learning requirements, challenges and strengths, so it is crucial to remodelling teaching methods to tolerate their situations, at the same time providing support, monitor their progressing and help them to build confidence. I think the most important thing a tutor can be is patient and supportive. As tutors, we have already completed these subjects, and so we know the 'pressure points' and ways to deal with them. It is our job to pass on this knowledge and help others. If someone is receiving tutoring, most often they are struggling with one or more parts of a topic…

Inside Norton SummitTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Alyssia reviewed titrations in chemistry, focusing on molar ratios and rearranging equations like n = m/M and C = n/V, as well as galvanic cells and balancing redox equations for her exam.

In Year 10, Sam worked on sketching linear graphs by finding x- and y-intercepts using the gradient-intercept method, then practised identifying equations of lines through various methods including calculating gradients.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Emily revised univariate statistics by exploring mean, median, mode, range, and began working with interquartile range using sample data sets.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student tended to rely on previous answer formats when solving algebra problems; as one tutor noted, "he looked back at old examples instead of working through new reasoning steps."

In a Year 12 chemistry session, the student was hesitant to attempt the written discussion portion of an assignment and avoided "thinking outside the box" when applying concepts in unfamiliar situations.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student was sometimes easily distracted during sessions, making it difficult to focus and set clear goals for what to cover next. This meant valuable lesson time was lost regaining focus or reviewing known methods.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Norton Summit noticed Alyssia, a senior student, moved from needing guidance on titration equations to independently solving even complex questions with mixed molar ratios by the end of her session.

Alessandro, in Year 10, showed a real shift—he now arrives knowing exactly which maths concepts he's struggling with and directs the session by asking focused questions rather than waiting passively.

Meanwhile, Lucy in Year 6 used to hesitate when facing new statistics topics but recently began tackling practice problems on her own once shown the method, showing more initiative with each session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Campbelltown Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Norton Summit Primary School.
