Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

Effective methods of studying, instead of encouraging them to spend too much time and get stressed of the massive load of knowledge. It is so much better if a tutor and teach them how to manage their time and work, how to remember the key concepts and apply them to do the real work. I have good communication skills with students which helps me to…

I believe it's truly the little things that count. By this, I mean being truly available for your students at all times of the day, working through their frustrations and areas of weakness with a growth mindset and patient attitude, and knowing how to bounce back and encourage them if they miss the mark academically. Being such a recent student…

I think that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to be interactive and encourage them to ask more and more questions. This makes the learning experience to be wholesome and complete. My strength as a tutor is that I can clear the basic concepts of students and teach them to approach the problem in a systematic and logical…

One of the most damaging things one can do as a tutor is establish a blind hierarchy with their student. A tutor does not impart facts and knowledge, he or she attempts to come, along with the student, to a mutual understanding of a concept and I find that much more constructive if you approach this from a peer perspective rather than an…

An ability to communicate a genuine passion for the subject. Patience and being calm in the delivery of the content. I think the most important thing as a tutor is to share your passion with student. The most effective learning occurs when the student is engaged, invested and passionate in the subject you are teaching. Forming a professional, friendly relationship with the student is key in achieving this. Although improvements in a certain topic of maths…

A tutor should provide comprehensive feedback for students once they understand specific problems students are having. They perhaps can offer solutions to problems students are struggling with. I have familiarised myself with and completed the VCE courses and STEM subjects, so I would have a decent understanding of how to work with students…

The best thing any Tutor can do is make a student like a particular subject which she/he used to previously dislike. This means that the Tutor has made a boring subject interesting to the students. And in this way, the student will remember what he/she learns for a lifetime and not just for the purpose of examinations. I am a very patient Tutor,…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to guide, support, and inspire them. The best mentors I've had were the ones that pushed me to see my own potential the way they easily could, espicially when I came close to giving up. They reignited my passion for the hard subjects through their own love for the content, and through the way they connected concepts to daily life, bringing the subject to life. I believe a tutor's…

The first thing is to make students not feeling too resistant to math. You need to be interested in a subject in order to achieve a good result. Also, a tutor should make the student feel comfortable and relax, and be confident to do math questions and ask questions. My strength is to use the simplest way to explain math questions. I had always…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them believe in themselves. Academic support is important, but confidence is what truly changes everything. When a student seeks for help of a tutor, it is important to figure it out where students get struggle or feel not confident. Inside Oak ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Max focused on multiplying and subtracting larger numbers and worked through basic area calculations for squares.

For Year 8, Ava tackled probability problems and statistics questions, using real-life scenarios to deepen her understanding.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Liam practiced factorising algebraic expressions and expanding brackets, building confidence with indices in preparation for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 maths, one student regularly avoided writing down working for equations, saying, "I can do this in my head," which led to missed sign errors and confusion with negatives.

For a Year 8 algebra task, skipping steps meant the method was unclear, so extra time was spent finding mistakes instead of moving forward.

In Year 7 English, not meeting the required essay word count ("didn't understand he needed to use 100 words") resulted in lost marks and frustration.

Meanwhile, a primary student forgot their workbook for multiple sessions, delaying progress on basic arithmetic skills and causing repeated catch-up.

Recent Achievements

One Oak Park tutor recently noticed a Year 10 student who, after previously struggling with negative numbers and often getting sidetracked during lessons, now completes problems with negatives more accurately—even managing to stay focused for longer stretches.

In a senior session, a Year 11 student began actively asking questions about formulas for surface area instead of quietly moving on when unsure; he's also connecting symbols like 'r' to their meaning in context, which hadn't happened before.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student surprised her tutor by independently explaining errors in her own narrative writing and confidently sharing her opinions on the book club novel "Wonder."

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Francis de Sales School.
