I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

I think a good tutor can make studies feel like a piece of cake rather than rocket science. I think as a tutor it is my job to foster critical thinking and problem solving skills, so that a student can develop independent ideas and eventually become confident in the subject. My greatest strength is my ability to differentiate instruction to meet…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

A tutor can play a very important role in motivating the student so that he can understand and achieve. Thus, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is instilling a strong belief in them that they can achieve whatever they want, provided they are giving their best. Well I think a tutor most important piece they can do for a student is take them from where they are to a place where they’re performing better in what they would like too. No matter where they are at whether it is passing to doing well or doing well to smashing it. I also think it’s about finding ways in which the student learns best. I think…

Irrespective of whether the students growth is minuscule or large, any sort of development should be rewarded. A tutor should be patient and understanding of a student's mistakes. A tutor should also help to develop skills for a student to understand a concept, not just remember it, and build on a student's ability to learn independently. I am relatable as I am a recently graduated student and am continuing my studies at Monash University, studying a…

Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

Actually speaking, the tutor should focus on potential development rahter than merely improving the skills of a student. It could be best tutors can adopt practices such as NLP ( neuro linguistic programming) to boost rapid learning of a student. But for that only truly commited tutors would raise their hands. Since it reqires a lot of hard yards.…

I think encouraging students to develop self-learning skills plays the important role in educational networks as we cannot tutor them forever. We should not only assist students only to understand the materials provided but also teach them the skills of how to learn effectively and what to do when encountering the new lesson/content of knowledge…

A tutor is someone that the student can feel comfortable, confident whilst being in a welcoming environment to ask and reach out about any questions regarding schooling subjects, and as well a support network to help build their pathway to reach their own successes. A tutor is there to be an extra pair of hands in explaining, discussing topics…

Henry was very happy with Hayden's style of tutoring. He found him clear and concise in the way he explained methods, and was teaching him the same way his teacher is at school. Whilst I was listening in the background I could hear that Hayden was very encouraging towards Henry which I'm sure gave him some confidence to tackle the next equation. I know that Hayden will leave more and more homework going forward, he was keen to get to know Henry as a person, identify his strengths and weaknesses first.

Inside OakleighTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Olivia worked through solving quadratic equations and practiced graphing equations, using examples to connect algebraic solutions with their graphical representations.

In Year 11, Harry focused on applying the rational root theorem to polynomials and tackled quartic equations from recent exam questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student James completed Math Methods Chapter 7 example problems, emphasizing function analysis and calculus applications relevant to his upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student's written work in algebra showed he skipped showing steps, which hid sign errors—this meant time was lost retracing calculations instead of moving forward.

A Year 11 student tackling calculus became distracted during sessions and often left questions incomplete when focus slipped.

For a Year 6 learner, diagrams and tables were sometimes missing or messy, making it hard to track working in worded problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student avoided writing out full solutions for fraction tasks, as noted: "just full working out," resulting in missed marks on tests even when the method was understood.

Recent Achievements

One Oakleigh tutor recently noticed a Year 11 student who used to avoid asking for help now confidently brings up challenging calculus questions at the start of each session, keen to tackle them together.

Another high schooler had been struggling with test mistakes in algebra but has started identifying exactly where she went wrong and correcting her own work before asking for feedback—a real shift from needing step-by-step guidance.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who was hesitant with multiplication tables is now reciting them unprompted and focusing for longer stretches during lessons, finishing all assigned problems independently last week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
