I believe a tutor is a person who is there to support, guide and encourage students to not just settle for an easy answer but question and discover new things. I believe tutors should allow students to embrace their mistakes and learn from them, and use their failures as experiences. I try different methods with students who are unable to grasp a…

A tutor should understand a student's struggle and achievements, and be able to bring out the fun in studying to help them in their academic struggles. I encourage and motivate students to excel and set a foundation for future studies, as well as providing an entertaining and educational environment suitable for each student. As a current student…

Helping students feel confident in their abilities creates a strong foundation for learning, as they are more likely to engage actively and tackle challenges head-on.…

Be a safe space where they can openly discuss their subject related problems (or problems such as stress due to studies etc) so you can listen to them and help them to find solutions. A good tutor can do a massive change in a student's life. They can make a student fall in love with a subject, boost their confidence helping them to perform well in…

1. A tutor should understand the different needs of different students and find a way of teaching that best suits them. So preparing suitable material for different students are very important. 2. Never teach to the test. It not only diminishes the student’s interest in the subject but also prevents them from developing further understanding…

A tutor typically works 1-on-1, therefor it's important to treat each student as an individual and figure out what style of learning works best for them. A tutor should collaborate with the student to help them reach academic heights that they would not be able to with regular schooling alone. I am positive, encouraging, but also thorough. I am…

Teachers are considered as one of the people who shape someone's future or career. Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

I believe that when the right tutor is paired with the right student, they can help the student to understand the pleasure of academic subjects. Tutors should be able to build independence and confidence in the student, allowing them to improve their problem solving skills and gain new approaches or strategies to learning. Inside Oakleigh EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 Dylan worked through a diagnostic quiz and reviewed probability concepts, reinforcing skills with targeted practice on challenging questions.

For Year 11 Parth, recent sessions focused on explaining the effects of changes in the cash rate on aggregate demand and unemployment, as well as developing structured written responses for economics papers covering AD-AS models and Australia's economic goals.

Meanwhile, another Year 11 student tackled market failure topics in Economics—such as externalities and allocative efficiency—using SAC preparation materials and short-answer exercises.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping steps while factorizing led to repeated calculation errors—one tutor observed, "lots of middleman equations left out," which made it harder to spot where mistakes occurred.

In VCE Economics, a student sometimes rushed through multiple choice questions without reading them fully, resulting in missed marks and confusion when tackling earlier topics.

Another senior student's essay responses lacked clear explanations of diagrams and omitted key terminology, especially under time pressure.

These habits meant valuable time was spent reworking answers or clarifying concepts instead of building new skills or gaining confidence with advanced material.

Recent Achievements

One Oakleigh East tutor noticed a Year 12 student who used to rush through written responses now taking time to structure answers clearly, adding more economic terminology and connecting ideas—something he'd struggled with before.

In a recent session with a Year 8 student, the tutor saw them approach tough factorisation problems much more independently; they finished most worksheet questions on their own after needing frequent hints in earlier lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously hesitated to ask for help began raising their hand when stuck, leading to them finishing all ten multiplication questions without errors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Oakleigh Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Amsleigh Park Primary School.
