Listen to the student. I firmly belive that students know where they lack and what's stopping them from achieving their goals. Ensure the student doesn't lose hope or motivation to study. It is imperative that students get enough time and space to practically apply what they learn in ways that pique their interests. As a tutor I strive to first…

I believe a tutor should be a mentor, someone the student can relate to and feel comfortable expressing their problems to, but should also be assertive and draw the line between being professional and being a friend. I think a tutor should do her best to teach the student to the best of his/her abilities, even if that means going slightly over…

the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is that he/she can understand where each of them is coming from and the tutor must be able to modify their teaching technique to best guide the student. The most important thing a tutor can also do is to see the potential in each student and bring out the best in each pupil. I am competent in…

A tutor should be patient and understanding of a student's mistakes. A tutor should also help to develop skills for a student to understand a concept, not just remember it, and build on a student's ability to learn independently. I am relatable as I am a recently graduated student and am continuing my studies at Monash University, studying a…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student, in my opinion, are: 1. Foster a love of learning: The best tutors inspire curiosity and make learning enjoyable, not just a chore. 2. Build confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt. A tutor can help them believe in their abilities and tackle challenges with a positive…

Well I think a tutor most important piece they can do for a student is take them from where they are to a place where they’re performing better in what they would like too. No matter where they are at whether it is passing to doing well or doing well to smashing it. I also think it’s about finding ways in which the student learns best. I think…

I think encouraging students to develop self-learning skills plays the important role in educational networks as we cannot tutor them forever. We should not only assist students only to understand the materials provided but also teach them the skills of how to learn effectively and what to do when encountering the new lesson/content of knowledge…

Inside Oakleigh SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max worked on measurement, specifically converting between units and identifying types of angles using diagrams.

In Year 8, Chloe tackled algebraic fractions—simplifying and multiplying them—and also reviewed techniques for solving for x in linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sam focused on speed calculations and practiced converting units of time within real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student repeatedly needed prompting to continue with long multiplication and rarely wrote out working, making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings—"he needs constant reminder to do it systematically."

In Year 9 algebra, a lack of confidence meant correct answers were often left unattempted, despite knowing the method.

A Year 4 learner was easily distracted during worded problems, which slowed progress on multi-step division.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for geometry questions forgot basic angle rules and struggled to explain their reasoning aloud; this made error correction much slower in practice tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Oakleigh South noticed a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step help with algebra now solves simple equations on his own, only checking in for reassurance at the end.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to leave worded problems unfinished has started working through each part methodically and completed all set questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who would often lose focus during longer tasks managed to finish an entire worksheet on area and perimeter accurately after staying engaged for the whole lesson—something he hadn't done before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warrigal Road Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh South Primary School.
