A tutor's job is to teach. However, I do believe that the student's experience during their time learning most important. From my observations, students will not really pay attention if they are not interested or if they are not having a good time, which is why, in my opinion, it is important that students are having a good time while they are…

Each student has a unique way of thinking, understanding and implementing. The most important thing a tutor can do is to understand how their students minds work, adapt to their way of thinking and understanding, and conceptualize theory for beneficial implementation. I once was a student and understand the importance of understanding a subject…

From my experience I noticed that there are students who still hold their voices at school when they have a doubt due to several factors. Once they are comfortable with a tutor, they are more open to questions in their mind and try solving them one on one with the tutor. On this note, I find being a tutor amusing as I always find solving their…

First of all tutor behaviour with students. A tutor shouldn't be the individual who would only be associated with studies and stuff. A tutor should be someone to whom a student can approach with any sorts of problem with the expectation that their tutor can find a solution to it. Moreover, a tutor should be a guiding light to the student. - Communication - Experience -…

To allow the student to learn by guiding them there. This way, I believe students are able to improve even after you’ve stopped tutoring them. In short, I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student would be for tutors to ensure that students are confident in how they approach a problem. My strengths as a tutor, I would say,…

A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. I will not be "above" them,…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is helping them improve their academics and achieve the highest goal in their ability. Encouragement and patience. Through personal experience, even if the student improve their score by 1% from their last test, this is enough of an encouragement for them to push harder and let them know you will be their for them anytime when they are stuck or needing help. Tutors should be able to build independence and confidence in the student, allowing them to improve their problem solving skills and gain new approaches or strategies to learning. Inside Oakleigh SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Max worked on measurement, specifically converting between units and identifying types of angles using diagrams.

In Year 8, Chloe tackled algebraic fractions—simplifying and multiplying them—and also reviewed techniques for solving for x in linear equations.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Sam focused on speed calculations and practiced converting units of time within real-world word problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student repeatedly needed prompting to continue with long multiplication and rarely wrote out working, making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings—"he needs constant reminder to do it systematically."

In Year 9 algebra, a lack of confidence meant correct answers were often left unattempted, despite knowing the method.

A Year 4 learner was easily distracted during worded problems, which slowed progress on multi-step division.

Meanwhile, a senior student preparing for geometry questions forgot basic angle rules and struggled to explain their reasoning aloud; this made error correction much slower in practice tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Oakleigh South noticed a Year 10 student who previously needed step-by-step help with algebra now solves simple equations on his own, only checking in for reassurance at the end.

In another session, a Year 8 student who used to leave worded problems unfinished has started working through each part methodically and completed all set questions without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who would often lose focus during longer tasks managed to finish an entire worksheet on area and perimeter accurately after staying engaged for the whole lesson—something he hadn't done before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Warrigal Road Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Oakleigh South Primary School.
