Tutoring is very different to a typical classroom setting. Each session is unique and solely focused on the one student. This one-to-one learning experience is something many students wouldn’t normally get in a classroom. Naturally, they’ll be able to ask as many questions as they want. As a result, I’ll feel I’m making a real difference…

As a high school leaver, I consider providing support and trust as well as accurate academic knowledge to be the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student. Students do have teachers at school, therefore, the job of a tutor is to revise and trigger the knowledge of students, letting them realise their potential. I have physical and…

I think its most important to listen and consider your students by asking questions, attentively listening to their responses to determine if they have underlying misunderstandings or misconceptions about the material. By letting a student explain the topic in their own words, I can diagnose the issue and perhaps offer a new perspective on how I…

Most important would definitely be effort towards a student. No student would want a tutor who does not have the best interest in them and would definitely not want a tutor who is giving 50% of their efforts. Another important thing a tutor can do for a student is show passion and that they care, and that they are someone the students can…

A tutor can guide a student to succeed. Not only in studies, but life in general. If tutors can make students aware of certain things which changes how they operate and that is the greatest thing a tutor can do. I am very patient and understanding. Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a tutor…

What I consider to be the most important things a tutor can do for a student are build self-confidence, without this they will not believe in themselves and their ability, and therefore will not make the improvements they are capable of, inspire them to create their own goals, both long-term and short term, big and small, and of course, help…

Inside Old GuildfordTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ali practiced double-digit multiplication and division without remainders, and worked on converting fractions into decimals using number lines.

In Year 8, Sara focused on quadratic equations—factoring and solving for x—and reviewed how to convert lengthy word problems into solvable mathematical expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student James revised divisibility rules (by 2, 3, 5, and 10) alongside work on factors and multiples through targeted practice questions.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 Mathematics, one student's exam performance was affected by panic under time pressure—"he rushed the questions and did not check over his work before submission"—leading to repeated calculation errors that went unnoticed.

In Year 4 English, another learner often gave up when faced with complex vocabulary or unfamiliar storylines; as noted, "once he hits a 'hard' question that isn't similar to others he gives up."

For both students, incomplete homework in several weeks made it difficult to identify which concepts truly needed review.

Missed opportunities for self-checking and communicating confusion led to persistent gaps in understanding.

Recent Achievements

One Old Guildford tutor noticed a big shift in Younas, a high school student who now speaks up right away about what he doesn't understand—previously, he'd hesitate or keep quiet, but lately he's been quick to communicate confusion and work through tough concepts like fractions and averages.

Another high schooler, after struggling with test mistakes, took the initiative to review each error in detail and asked for specific practice next time.

Meanwhile, Andrew (primary) used to get stuck on reading tricky words but now reads aloud without giving up, explains new vocabulary using his own actions, and even uses those words in sentences.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Guildford Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Old Guildford Public School.
