The most important thing for me I guess is to connect with them in a way they feel like they can be comfortable around me so that maybe then they get inspired to learn; to be an inspiration, that is. I once scrolled past this quote on social media that made so much sense to me, "You cannot teach children to behave better by making them feel worse.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is understand their concerns with the materials they are being taught. Every student has unique problems to overcome in their schooling life and viewing each student as an individual is key. It is also important to be able to rephrase and recontextualise material given to them by their…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is be patient. If they are struggling to understand a subject, they are going to get more frustrated the longer it takes for them to grasp. I believe that it is exacerbated by the class moving on to another topic before the student is ready, and it is our job to work with them…

I think a tutor can teach students some learning methods and think mode through which students can not only know how to solve a simple question but also apply these to the similar questions. First, I am a really patient and mild girl. If students can not understand what I teach, I will be very patient to teach them again and again. Second, I had…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil the key executive study skills that are used in the sessions that serve the student well and ensure they apply them all the time. Tutoring is a noble occupation. My experience with the previous tutoring has taught me many things that can be really important for a student. Not every child is able to cope with his/her studies and routine. Being a student of Psychology, I prefer encouraging and motivating them to do better each day. Some students tend to trigger their fear of…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their problem solving skills. Regardless of subject, the ability to assess a problem, devise a strategy, execute said strategy and re-assess it if need be is a major life skill that will help a student in their academic career and beyond. I think that I am very good at meeting the…

Aside from teaching the content in an understandable and logical manner, I also think that a tutor should try to inspire a student to become a self-directed and motivated learner. Such a transformation creates the best performing students because they no longer overly rely on the tutelage of others. Rather, they learn to handle a variety of…

Tutors should execute multiple duties to ensure students' needs are met exceptionally. One duty includes building interpersonal relationships with students and creating a supportive environment so that learners will feel comfortable and encouraged to engage in lessons. Tutors should also have a solid grasp of the concepts being taught. Expertise…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. I…

Obviously bumping up grades. But before that comes there is the massive component where the tutor is able to let the student feel like they actually know what they're doing. Truly the most important thing any tutor can do for a student is to help create and cultivate a growth mindset. By doing this, students become lifelong, innovative learners. This certainly occurs in the classroom, but teachers are expected to do this to upwards of 20+ children. Tutors are important to students because they assist in expanding…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help build their confidence. A student is able to do anything, learn anything but only if they believe that they can do it or learn it. Inside ParkwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Connor practised converting between units of length, volume, and mass, then reinforced measurement skills with area calculations and perimeter problems.

In Year 8, Seb worked through linear equations by plotting graphs to identify gradients and y-intercepts, as well as rearranging formulas to make x the subject using step-by-step algebraic methods.

For a senior student in Year 11 General Maths, recent sessions focused on applying the binomial theorem and analysing geometric sequences, including revision for upcoming exams.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, one student avoided showing working when rearranging equations, leading to repeated confusion—"minimal writing" meant errors went unnoticed.

In Year 10, a learner skipped assigned textbook questions before an exam and struggled with significant figures; as the tutor noted, "she must do the homework questions I assigned to her before Monday for her exam."

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student kept forgetting key formulas in functions and did not record their steps clearly. The result: time was spent retracing old ground instead of moving forward confidently into new concepts or assessments.

Recent Achievements

A Parkwood tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to rely heavily on hints now independently solves linear function problems, even plotting graphs and pinpointing gradients without prompting.

In a recent session with a Year 12 group, students who previously mixed up how to calculate tax demonstrated clear understanding by correctly working through complex taxation scenarios on their own.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4—who often hesitated over her times tables—confidently recited the fours and explained why order of operations matters before moving on to trickier BODMAS challenges.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mobile Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Arundel State School.
